I have a Remington model 700 ADL in 270 Win. The weapon is a "safe queen". It was manf in 1983. Has had less then 40 rounds through it. It comes with a camo sling and a Weaver 3x9 scope.
THE TRADE:
Man wants to offer me a 1972 three screw Ruger Blackhawk in 357 magnum. The Ruger is in very good condition. It is a 6 1/2 in barreled gun. Comes with a cheap holster.
Would this be a good trade. I don't shoot the 270 and I would shoot the Ruger. But is it a good trade on my end $$$ wise.

Thanks for the help

The .357/3-screw Blackhawk is the most common of its kind, but it has a faithful following that will shell out bucks for one that hasn't been upgraded(?) with the transfer bar modification.

The Remington is also common, and not especially popular in .270. On the other hand the scope adds some value. It's value is mostly dependent on how many hunters are around where you live who would be interested in it.

Personally I would tend to trade something I didn't use for something that I would, and I think that over time the Ruger would more likely increase in value vs. the Remington.

But again, the used gun market where you live might be different.

I'd make that trade, because I'd shoot the Blackhawk 10x more. I like handguns though so take it as a biased opinion. Good luck.

I'd either rebarrel/stock/scope the rifle into something you would use, or trade it for something you might use.

I had a Blackhawk 357 I had and wasn't particularly fond of, traded for a 35 Remington marlin 336 with the factory 4x scope even.

turns out I'm not really fond of that either!

Hopefully this 4" 29-2 I'm going to take a look at today does something for me

Oh well, thats half the fun... trying all the different things, letting them go when you've had your fun or didn't get the results you were hoping for.

The Old Model .357 Blackhawk is perhaps one of the finest sixguns to ever chamber the .357Mag. It's a medium sized frame, similar to the Colt SAA or New Frontier and a much better platform for the .357 than the later large frame New Model. Although the 1962-1973 Old Models are less desirable and less valuable than the earlier flat-tops of 1955-1962. If you think the rifle is worth $350-$400 or less, trade away. That is, as long as the Ruger is in good condition.

If it's something you want to replace something you basically don't, don't worry about the $$$. You spent that years ago. Get something you'll enjoy.

That sounds fair. Dollar to dollar your about even, so let the decision be made by what you think you will use and enjoy more.

This is generally my take when considering trading/selling a firearm I don't use much or enjoy to obtain one I hopefully will. One of those years ago was a 3 screw Blackhawk for a SxS grouse gun. Still have and still use the SxS, but i regret gettin' rid of the Ruger.

The OP said " I don't shoot the 270 and I would shoot the Ruger."

That is precisely why I recently traded a Smith m.40 Lemon Squeezer nickel safe queen for a K38 Combat Masterpiece in very good shooting condition. I grew tired of the safe queen ; I love handling and shooting the shooter.

If I were you I would make the trade.

My "rule of thumb" for trades is;

As long no one gets lied to or cheated, and both parties walk away happy, it is a good trade.

I would make the trade in your position, but I'd have a tough time doing myself, because I'd love to have that .270. Of course, I'd love the Blackhawk, too.

I would trade them straight up if you took the Weaver scope off. IMO you should get the Blackhawk plus $100 for the rifle the way it sits. (just my opinion of course)
