I am considering trading my S&W 629 Classic 6" for a Ruger Super Redhawk both in 44 Mag.
Both are in about the same condition (very good) which one is worth more?

The redhawk does come with scope rings.

Any help would be appreciated.

Greeting's Sir-

If both are in the same shape, I would go out on a limb
and say that the Smith 629 Classic would be worth more.
With the endurance package of the S&W, I see no need
to trade; unless its just a matter of preference?

Welcome Biggun! :)

I'd say for sure the Smith will exceed the Ruger in value. Let's guess here ... Ruger may be worth $350 - $400, on the used market ... the Smith ...... more like $450 -$500, even more ...... just quick figures from the ''feel''.

The Ruger is maybe a good option if you wish to ''pound'' it with real hot stuff ... but otherwise - seems a shame to lose the Smith.

I'm a ruger man through and through.

But I have to admit that the smith will be worth more in identical condition. And will handle a touch smoother, and will most likely have a better trigger.

That being said I carry a 44 SRH on hunts. Why?

1. Easy to field strip and clean. All I need is a flatbit screwdriver and a can of clp to stay shooting regardless of conditions.

2. Digests bear stompers all day with no whimpers.

3. Less "pretty" than a smith 629, so I don't feel bad about the occasional ding or scratch.

Fuel For Thought-

Although my 5" Smith & Wesson 629-5 .44 magnum
arrived with a "buttery smooth" DA straight from the
box; the same thing can be had on weapons thats
DA wasn't so smooth, simply by installing a $15.00
WOLFF spring kit.

I added one of these kits to my Smith & Wesson 6"
686-5 .357 magnum, and it made all the difference
in the world.

The Smith's are definately worth more, go price used ones of both brands.

For hunting I prefer the Super Redhawk. Integral scope mount, rings, and it's one tough muthah!

I would choose a super redhawk over the smith maybe it just me but i like them better i sold a model 29 to get my first super in 44 mag and havent felt bad a day .. just picked up my second super this one in 454 what a riot.

Well I have owned 2 of each - although never at the same time. The SR 7.5" was my first ever 44 mag back in the late 80's. Was an unusual looking revolver back then. Was a great shooter. Never even opened the scope ring package - could shoot with open sights pretty well back then! Eventually sold the revolver when I no longer had access to an outdoor range. In retrospect should have kept the old beast!

My first Smith 44 was a 6.5" 29 Classic. Very crisp single action trigger , much better than the SR. Extremely accurate.

Second SR bought in 2000 , another 7.5" - unfortunately the proverbial lemon. Was going to send it back to Ruger but ended up taking it back to the gun shop. Did use the scope rings on this one. Did not realize that the ring/scope unit must be removed in order to disassemble the revolver - I was not able to lift the hammer out of the frame (which is part of the disassembly procedure) with the scope attached. Like I said I should have kept the original SR!

My current 44 - A Smith 629 Classic with the 6.5" barrel. Probably the most accurate revolver I have ever owned - think this one is going to stay with me for some time!

Both revolvers are good ones unless you have my luck and get a "junker".

The Smith would have the better resale value and a great trigger with an eye pleasing design.
The Ruger would be cheaper on resale, ugly as a fence post, tough as nails, and probably see more usage in the woods than any other .44 except the Blackhawk.
I would call it a toss up with your intended usage being the deciding factor.

If you're a reloader that likes to push the limits, or a hunter that needs to shoot hot loads, I'd go with the SRH, but if you're a target shooter that shoots standard velocity factory loads, or you want the gun for home & personal protection....the S&W.

I like Ruger's revolvers, and presently own & shoot a 6" GP-100 with a Wolf spring kit installed. I'm using it in Bullseye compitions at my range, and not doing too bad with it either. As with all the other Ruger revolvers I've owned in the past, it's been very accurate and relieable. Hopefully by next weekend I'll be in possession of my first S&W revolver..(4" 686)..and plan to use that in our range's practical / combat compitions.

Down the road I hope to acquire a .44 magnum, and the choice will be a difficult one indeed....(629, 629 Classic, Redhawk, Super Redhawk...?)

Worth more? The Smith, period. (Unless it's been dragged behind a truck and the Ruger is LNIB, and even then... :uhoh: ) Rugers are reasonably priced when new, and this doesn't help at sale or trade time.

Should you trade? Depends on what you plan on using the gun for. If you want to shoot a blue zillion 280gr Grizzly Rollers out of the thing, I'd definitely consider picking up the Redhawk. If factory 240gr loads are going to be its primary diet with only occasional snacks of heavier stuff, the Smith will hold up just fine.

What was the reason you want to trade ? Are you a hunter, occasional plinker or target shooter ? I personally like Rugers. The SRH is one ugly gun,but it is tough as nails. The Smith is nice and pretty. I for one would sell it outright and then buy the SRH. As the previous writers have mentioned the Smith is probably worth more, but not as strong.
So you have to ask yourself what are you're intentions. Maybe you should keep it,buy the SRH and then later down the line you will have a pretty decent idea which one you like better.

I have 3 Smiths,but would rather shoot my S-Blackhawk !

When I first answered this post back in April, I had not as yet owned or fired a S&W revolver to make an honest comparison. Now that I've been shooting both a 4" 686 and a 6" GP-100, I just traded in the 6" GP-100 for another 686..(6").
I don't hunt, I just target shoot, and the S&W revolvers just have a better trigger. Both DA and SA trigger pull far exceeds anything you can do with the Ruger trigger, even after break-in, and a Wolf spring kit installed, the "out of the box" trigger on the S&W is much better for target work.

Now with that said, if I was to take up handgun hunting, and using loads that could kill a bulldozer with one shot, I'd probably get a Super Redhawk, but I live in a state that doesn't allow handgun hunting, so when I make the step up to a .44 magnum, I do believe I'll probably get the 6" S&W 629.

I've come to the honest opinion that for DA revolvers, it's Smith & Wesson all the way. For SA revolvers, it's Ruger all the way......(unless you happen to be a millionare, and can afford a Colt Python, or Single Action Army.... )

Redhawk vs S&W

Ever notice the weird sound a Redhawk makes when you cock it?

I started out with a S&W 29. I then acquired a DW 44 mag. Then I picked up a Redhawk. I sold the Redhawk. The S&W and the DW are keepers. The S&W looks...well...like a S&W, 'nough said. If I want to stop a bulldozer I use the DW 44 mag. If I want to stop a tank I use the DW 445 Super Mag. The DW is tough as a Redhawk, has a SA tigger pull as good as a S&W, and is more accurate than either.
