My younger son ordered a Lee Loadmaster. Where are the websites that have all the tweaks and helpful hints for them?

He's excited to get started.

I ordered his brother the Challenger kit. (Yes, I did something for the younger one too.)

This should get them started well. I have been wanting to teach them, but you have to wait until they are ready.

Awesome. Thanks.

The idea is to let my sons do everything, with me just answering questions here and there, and not doing it for them. Hands on is the best teacher.

Please don't screw up by fallowing all those Lee Load Master tweaks. Watching them is a good way to learn the press but the one putting grease all over the thing is going to cause problems with the primer system. If Lee doesn't suggest it I don't ether.

ETA: Congrats on a great press.

One of the best tricks is to use a die over the primer seateing position to center the brass. In my 40 and 357 sig setup I use a 40 sizing die with the decapper pin removed or place my 357 sig sizer die in that position to set the shoulder after decapping with a 40 die in the first position. In 9mm I use a 38spc flare die just to hold the brass centered. The primer system works well as long as the brass is centered. Keep a can of keyboard duster close by to blow off the turret. I really like the loadmaster.

I've never loaded 223 on mine, but 40 and 357 work pretty well. better than 9mm anyway.

universal decap in station 1, sizing die without decapping pin in 2, powder drop in 3, seat in 4. crimp separately if that's your thing in 5.

I don't think I'd let anybody learn completely "hands-on" with reloading. Some mistakes mean that the stuff just won't work or won't work very well. Other mistakes mean a bloody mess.

If he has any sense at all, he'll take your advice on loading the .40. I still use that 165/6.1 UC/1.135" formula. Just plain works.

Oh, I'll be there to make sure (oversee) of the important things to start, but I want their hands to do it.

I have a feeling that whenever Walkalong's son get his hands on the press, they will already have the basics quite clear in their minds, and all they'll need is some supervision. I say that one is a lucky young man.

post #7 nailed it , Don't fix what ain't broke , I'm sure Walkalong knows this but others will be clicking on those links , I watched some of those vids years ago and just shook my head :banghead:

the timing video is a good one, it is on Lee's site , if the bolt on the bottom of the ram comes loose or you don't know what you are doing and you loosen it thinking that's how you get the door open to get out the spent primers ! yep I did that , , anyway then you need to reset the timing , easy fix with Lee's video (10sec job) I only had to do it that one time in 7 years and that one was all my fault ,

9mm work better with a little case lube , not needed but makes things go better also the 30 carbine shell holder fits the 9mm better than the 9mm shell holder

as said above : keep the primer ram clean and use only a little lite oil not grease, powder will get in there and make the ram stick not letting the next primer drop in for the next case

if you try to go to fast with slow burning powder where the case are more than half full some powder will jump out when the shell plate makes that sudden stop and it will make it's way around to the primer system , keep it clean and it will run just fine , mine has for many thousands of rounds and over 7 years

mine is set with a decap only die in station #1, size and prime in #2, flare and powder dump in #3, seat in #4, and crimp in #5,

I only do strait walled cases in mine but if I were going to do bottle neck cases I'd put a powder check die in #4 and seat in #5

every thing else I can think of right now would be in the book that came with the press

Enjoy , I love my LoadMaster

This isn't a tweak but just how I do it. I deprime in #1, size & prime in #2, flare & charge in #3, I have a light over #4 to inspect & seat the bullet, & seat & crimp in #5.

Am I right in assuming you are sizing in station #2 to line up the case for priming?

yes and to assure contestant primer seating depth, also if you get going to fast your case may not be all the way in station #1 and it will not line up with the die , where as a decaping die has a larger mouth than the sizing die so you don't have to worry about the case being in prefect , I ran in to this with 44mag , that when I started using the decap only die in #1
