The Pitting on the buttplate is common with Cheap Brass, or brass that is very old and not made the way we make smelt and cast brass now.
It is not that big of deal, and only means that the metal was not cast with a consistant mixture.
So the Zinc Copper and Tin are not even thru the metal.
But you mentioned that these were Heirlooms.
I would like to point out that the word Heirloom , does not mean " OLD " or Antique.
The word is , something that is passed down thru the Family to an Heir.
So if you inheireted your dads first rifle , and it is a Ruger 10/22 made in 1976, and you intend to pass it to your son, then it is a Heirloom.
But most people just assume that the wood Heirloom means it is 100 years old for some reason.
The family linage may not add value to a gun, but it is the memories to you that will make it Priceless.
But when someone tells me that they have a Heirloom, I take it it means, " Not For Sale "
