dixie, but some call it florida
got one of those aimsurplus belgium hi powers recently. while taking it apart and cleaning it i checked how loose the barrel was to the slide by pulling back the hammer, and taking just a hair off the resistance while not unlocking the barrel....

it moves a bit back and forth. i don't have measurements to explain it better, but it was more than i expected, but id' say not more than a few millimeters if i had to guess......

then i went and looked at the barrel lugs and how they fit in the slide recesses. no apparent rounding of either. some wear on the slide recesses but not all that much.....and no apparent burr creation or rounding that seem out of the ordinary, considering the amount of years and use this pistol has done. with the barrel put in the slide in the locked position it does move a bit back and forth.

although this is an old one and i know very little about hi powers so maybe it is made this way? basically i really don't know......

not being a gun smith in anyway, shape, or form.......how much movement is too much, when it comes to slide and or barrel damage...and will it turn a useable pistol into a paperweight? appreciate any feedback or insight as this is a topic i know very little on.....

i have no pictures or videos made to show more detail.....just looking more for some basic 101 common sense teachings on hi powers on this topic.....

i will eventually take it to a gun smith and have him look it over, but wanted to get my ducks in a row before i head over.......plus never hurts to learn a thing or two in general.......

thank y'all in advance........

I can't really help much with your question with the barrel, but I can add that Hi Powers in general do not have the tightest tolerances. Not uncommon for them to feel a little loose.

While it's always a good idea to have a surplus weapon checked out I can tell you that if I'm understanding what you're describing, it is not normal for a HP or even a clone to have that kind of movement. It may be acceptable but not normal.

If you have the slide off and upside down with spring/guiderod removed, there is normally zero to barely discernible movement of the barrel front-to-back in the slide. If you're seeing more than that it is cause for concern and should be checked. It may not be unsafe but the barrel was definitely not fit correctly or else wear has occurred that is not readily visible.

Do the barrel/slide/frame serials match?

It's been my experience that HP's whether commercial or contract are some of the best fit guns out there straight from the factory. One reason for their $1k price tag.

^Good info thanks. I have a modern hi power so I started to compare them last night. The new one has less movement. The questionable hi power will be going to the gunsmith. Not worth the risk of permanent damage or being unsafe.

it's an infamous century import. The serial numbers appear to match. So i can only assume they match.

Appreciate your feedback and insight on the topic.

You're welcome. I'm not a certified expert by any means, just relaying my experience. I bought my first HP, a '77 Sport' in '78 or '79. Added a few since then. The only other handgun I have as much respect/desire for are the CZ's.
If your serials all match and you can't identify excessive wear, it may have been that way all its life. Those appear to be ex-Israeli guns which seem to have more carry wear than anything and I would have expected an unsafe condition to be caught by an armorer at some point. They are contract guns which explains some of the finish marks you'd never find on a commercial HP. I'd still be surprised that FN would let one out with a loose fit barrel but mistakes happen. Hopefully yours is within specs.

I've acquired a few ex-Israeli guns from Cole's and not found any that appear to have much actual wear. Most of his HP's are parkerized and don't have their original finish but they also don't have a huge import stamp. If you're in the market for another HP I would definitely recommend checking out his offerings.
Good luck and please post back with your findings and put a pic up if you can. I'd like to see what yours looks like.
