Will a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8 X 36 scope fit on a long action Savage rifle? I have a one piece base on the rifle now with standard rings. I think the tube length is going to be close.

If not, some extended dovetail rings would work if that's the base you went with. Being a 32mm scope will help too...

That scope won't fit a long action Savage without extension rings. It will fit a Savage short action or any other long action.

I'm pretty sure the base is a one piece Leupold base. I'm also pretty sure that the rings are just standard Leupold rings.

The base and rings are already on the gun with another scope. I think the scope is actually a 36 mm scope. It is a 2.5-8 X 36.

Is there a better base that I could go with instead of the Leupold one piece that is on the gun and not have to go with extended rings?

It should fit with the rings you have now.
Leupold says that scope has 5.1" of mounting length. How far apart are your rings, outside-to-outside?

Wow it really won't fit on a Savage LA? I have the same scope in Zee rings on my M70 Safari Express and there is no way the Savage action is longer. That's interesting.

The action isn't longer, but the loading/ejection port is. Much longer, and the mounting holes are much farther apart than any other guns. This is a common issue with all Savage rifles. Their short actions loading/ejection port is only 1/16" shorter than my Winchester long actions.

I didn't initially catch the 1 piece base part in the OP. With that maybe, but it won't be possible with 2 piece bases and no extension rings.

Not my gun, simply a photo I found on the net for illustration. This is a much longer scope and it still needed help to fit on a long action Savage rifle.

I use Weaver bases on my Savages. I use the #402 extended front base with the mounting slots to the rear.
I mounted a Leupold Vari-X II 3x-9x on a friends M110 a number of years ago.
It was cheaper to get the Weaver bases and some Simmons rings than the extension Leupold rings.
The Millet rings are a little less expensive than the Leupold if you decide to go that route.

If you have the one piece weaver style base it shouldn't be an issue. With the 2 piece bases I doubt it would fit.

Are you ordering the scope and wondering if you should get new rings/bases in the same order to save shipping? Like Haxby said, you've got 5.1" of tube length. I'd at least measure it and see if it's close.

I was also surprised at how little room I had on my Savage short action.

I have a Leupold one piece base and went ahead and ordered Leupold extension rings. The scope does fit on the standard rings now but with really no back and forth play. The front extension ring should give me a half inch.
