I just got a polish wz.44 last night and wont be getting ammo until the first. But i have a Swiss k31 and have shot it with surplus ammo and its loud,. to tell you how loud, i also have a 6.5 carcano m41 and i was at a freinds house and shot my carcano and i got the k31 out and he was indoors when i shot it and my freind told my dad "what on earth is he shooting! A cannon?" Its twice as loud as my carcano lol (carcano uses 6.5x52 Swiss uses 7.5x55) after looking at the cartridges i think the shorter barrel of the polish mosin will be a but louder even though the cartridges are similar.
What do you guys think?

I'd put money that the Mosin's louder.
I mean, they're more common so you hear more in general, but I've never heard anyone say "it's still not as loud as my K31.
Besides, I have a hard time imaging anything you can carry around louder than little Ivan.

I have owned a couple 44 carbines. They are very loud.... And neither was very accurate.

The K31 is a Mercedes and the 44 carbines are a Ford Fiesta.

I had a Circle 11 Polish that had a bad bore in the last three inches of the barrel.
I cut it down to 17.5" just to see how it would do.
One time at the range, I sat down at a bench, and the guy next to me said.
"You might want to move down a couple of benches, because I am shooting a short barreled 300 Win Mag and the muzzle blast is herendous."
After I fired five shots, he got up and moved down five benches.
It also shot a 2' long flame out the barrel with military ammo.

So to answer the question, I think the Polish is louder even with a 20" barrel.

There both quiet when using proper hearing protection.;)

True.. But the concussion is pretty nice out if the k31, standing anywhere near it hits you . Within easy 10 feet of it anyway,

The k31 is a very finely crafted rifle. But did you have the russian 44s? The polish 44s rank up there with the Finnish mosins so they're also crafted pretty good

Il have to look at mine then? Its in virtually unissued shape so i wouldn't think it would be messed up. But wow it was that bad lol??

My (bubba'd when I got it) Polish M44 is my favorite rifle to drag out. I like the way the concussion echoes in my sinus cavity when I shoot it....

I picked up a K31 a few months ago, but work has kept me out of town and I've only put 6 rounds through it. My first impression was (besides "this is the nicest trigger I've ever pulled") that the M44 was louder.

I own an M44 and can honestly say that I never noticed it being very loud. I may double up on hearing protection, but I never noticed any particular amount of concussion that really stood out in my mind. In fact, the only two times I really remember a gun being very loud is when I shot my CZ75 with cloth stuffed into my ears because I forgot my plugs (a big mistake that I will never make again, as I now make sure I have at least one pair of plugs stashed in my vehicle) and the time my friend was shooting my AR at an indoor range while I was only wearing my Impact Sport earmuffs.

Huh

I have both. I have never noticed that one was particularly louder than the other.

@ AMC317
The damage to the barrel was caused by careless storage and lack of proper cleaning by the previous owner.
Not the Quality of the rifle or manufacturing.
The Polish are good quality, but once they leave the wholesaler, the poor treatment by others shows up fast.
Especially with cheap corrosive ammo and a steel cleaning rod on the rifle.
You cant fix Stupid.

Yes m44 was louder! The cuncussion was a lot more and so was the fireball!

Does it really matter??? Your looking for a gun with the loudest bang at the range? Why? To impress(BOTHER other shooters? I have no problem with loud guns when shooting at targets or sighting in. I do have a problem with a clown just making a big bang under the range roof to bother other shooters. It's happened to me several times at a range I've belonged to 35 years. A,Holes just pulling the trigger to see how it would effect other shooters. The police were called(it's their home range) and the big boom clown was removed. Think about your fellow shooters.

You might want to get a slip on recoil pad along with the ammo. As well as shooting out dragon belches of flame and concussion waves that will move walls they tend to kick like a mule on steroids.

I've only shot my own 44 one time but it tenderized my shoulder like a big tooth faced mallet with me being a thin cut cheap piece of meat.... :D It's waiting for my home reloads so I can produce some slightly "recoil managed" ammo for it.

I don't plan on parting with it though. It was made in 1953 just like me!

Lags, I loved your reply. Made me laugh at my screen it did... :D

Once you get up to 50 gr of powder or more theyre all bout the same to me. Vepr 308 got some attention because of the distinctive sound of bolt slamming around.

reread

I just now reread this thread. Whether one of these rifles is louder than the other is very subjective. (like how recoil feels) Are you next to the gun? How far from the muzzle (the intensity of sound deceases 6Db per distance doubling.)
Are you shooting the gun.....some of the sound effect is transmitted through the stock to the bones of the body and thence to the ear....makes a difference in perception.)
How do you go about measuring the sound or the feel of concussion?
It is somewhat true that a shorter barrel will be louder...and produce more muzzle flash...how much more? in general, though, you have two cartridges of about the same bore size and using similar charge weights......how much different should you expect them to be? Not very.

I'm not looking for the gun with the biggest blast, if I were Id get a 300win mag or bigger:) I was just curious because the k31 was pretty bad and I heard the mosin carbines were really bad and I can't go shooting all the time because where I live.

I'm not recoil sensitive lol, not uncommon for me to shoot a full tube of 12gauge high brass loads

In that case you'll love it. Please post pictures and your impressions from the first time out to share with the rest of us M44'ers.

I don't shy from recoil. But it does beat me up. One time I took out my regular 91/30 Mosin and shot off one of the paper bundles. Or maybe a bundle and a half. I packed it up and then tried to do some precision shooting with a handgun for testing ammo accuracy. WELL! ! ! ! THAT was a complete waste of time! My arm was so shocky and shaky and the sight picture jiggling all over that I didn't even pull the trigger one time.... :D
