Today I modded 3 of my Navy models.
Caps have a habit of falling under the hammers and this simple mod helps.
Take a round file and on the right side of the hammer opening ( gun in shooting position), round off the sholder of the opening a very little bit.
I could see where the caps were rubbing/hitting the sholder of my one range session, "new" '51 Navy so I did the mod.
It's an old trick often used on .31 caliber revolvers, done forever.
Next I'm going to fill inthe hammer notch that holds on to the "safety pins. This area also picks up cap fragments. A smoothed out dab of JB weld fills it forever.
If you're having the same problems, try these tricks!

#1 I can't get pictures to stick, sorry.
I had hoped the description would guide you enoufg, sorry. Be sure to only remove less thn 1.64 of metal while rounding that sholder. The most omportant thing is to eliminate the square edge.
#2 Alwways a joker!
Naw Ther's no fix to protect your hand,
. In the "Old Days" people were tougher and it didn't them! Go split some wood to build up calouses and it won't bouther you either.
Seriously, I hate that too! I cry easly..
The pieces are not only hot, they're also sharp! I've pulled seversl embedded in the skin.
Have fun shooting!

The old caps, brass or copper were thicker and caps stayed in place, can't imagine running a war with the ones we have now . I have a half a tin from "Replica Arms" that I am saving for the Armageddon.
Till then cap posts work.

I've actually learned after a half dozen or so times of having to switch hands and flip away the shard trying to brand my palm to turn the gun well over to the right while cocking the hammer so the shards tend to fall free. Friends watching me do this in a match ask me why since it's clearly slower for cowboy action shooting. But it's a LOT slower if I have to switch hands and deal with a smoking and sizzling palm.

Fineredmist, ZVP is talking about slightly rounding the corner where the recoil shield and hammer slot is on the main frame. If you look into the hammer slot on the frame at half cock and while turning the cylinder so you can see the ends of the nipples going by? He's saying to round that corner on the frame on the right side where the nipples disappear slightly.

I never get hot caps in my hand 'cause I'z a LEFTY and they free fall over my knuckles. I do get hot caps trapped when I shoot two handed but I only have to let go with the right hand.
