Some of you may have followed the problems I was having with my Blhk throat and wide front driving band boolits causing hard cylinder rotation.
I fixed that by trimming back some cases for the short term to work my way thru a 500 box of boolits.
What I found was I really like the boolits and now do not want to change.

QUESTION: Is it better to lenghten the chamber or open up the throat. I think the chamber would need to be about .020 longer or the throat opened to .359-.3595. I need some real experience here.

I haven't "followed your problems", but it sounds like you are trying to use a SWC boolit that is too large to fully seat in the chambers. What is the diameter of these boolits?

I've had a similar problem with .454 Casull and boolits sized .453".....they would only chamber with very hard pressure. I sized them to .452" and solved the problem.

My point is that altering the gun to fit some oversized boolits is not to be considered lightly.

A properly seated bullet shouldn't do anything to the cylinder rotation.
You can't make the chamber longer anyway. What's your OAL? What bullet weight? .357 Mag or .44 Mag?
You really want to alter your revolver for 500 bullets?

My 1973 Ruger Blackhawk has a throat diameter of .3584
My Missouri boolits have a diameter of .359+.
The shortest oal I can crimp just behind the front driving band with a 1.280 trimed case is 1.605
When I load this cartridge it jams as it goes to battery.
If I resize the Missouri boolit to .3584" *, 95% of the problems go away.
If I use the OT (which measures ootbox at .3583) all problems go away.
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=763513 Sizing the bullets to the correct diameter is what i would do. My cast are sized at .3575" and have worked very well in many 38/357 firearms. If you dont want to size the bullets correctly, have a pistol smith open the leade/throat. http://www.saami.org/PubResources/CC_Drawings/Pistol/357%20Magnum.pdf

Tx 243winxb,
That was cool how you pulled up my previous post! That really helps!
I know the chamber lenght is ok, but I wasn't sure how much of the throating is taken care of with the chambering reamer. I need to talk to the die people next. I know what I need to do, I was just looking for some expert advice from those that have been there done that.
454pb right you are to not take this lightly.
Sunray, see previous post. Tx for input.

See previous post by 243 on my previous post.
Case length not a problem as I have been able to trim cases back to 1.270 and almost solve the rotation issue. I haven't gone to 1.265, but I think that will probably cure it.
BUT I am still pushing a .3585 to .3593 boolit through a .3583 hole. I'm not sure if this squish is affecting accuracy any as accuracy is good. Pressure signs are evident with flattened primers on the rounds that squish (hard roration), but not on those that pass pluck test ok.
I think 243 hit it in that I need to increase the "leade" or forcing cone to accept the longer front driving band and also open the throat.
Still testing let you know the results.

Of course there was another option I wasn't considering--- DONT CRIMP a
nd just seat the bullet to 1.590!
Ill have to try that also and if no slipping, its a good option.

It is a lot easier to work on a bullet to make it fit a gun, than to modify a gun to fit a certain bullet. The next bullet you try may not fit your modified gun.

dickttx, you and many others have pointed me in this direction. Thank you.

I did get chance to cut 25 cases back to 1.265 and crimp the Missouri 158 LSWC Kieth style behind the front driving band at 1.590--- Hooray, they all passed the plunk test (fall in and out of the chamber cleanly) without the boolit sticking in the throat. SOOOOO without modifying the weapon I have a way to continue shooting the boolits I have come to like.

I also took some new RP cases ,oal 1.285, and loaded the same WITHOUT crimping, but the front driving band was partially covered. Oal 1.590. These also cleanly passed the plunk test. So I have this option also IF the boolits stay put WITHOUT the roll crimp.

I still have the squish problem or not problem depending on future accuracy.

Tx to all, Catpop
