Looking for scope to put on 7-08 Winchester Feather. Compact. Under $700.00, length not over 12.5", side focus preferred not absolute, 44mm or less front obj. 30mm preferred over 1". Use: deer, coyotes, occ. targets 95% shots under 250yds, most under 150yds. I got some in mind but would like to hear opinions to confirm.

Leupold vx3 2.5-8 with a custom shop tmr reticle would be very useful for this type of rifle.

Vortex has some really nice glass in your price range. That is where my search would start, and most likely end. Go with a 3-9 or similar variable power but stay under about 12 max power for a hunting gun.

You can a very good scope for the job when you find a motivated seller. Looking up the latest and greatest scope in a catalog and paying 10% off is not giving your money much leverage. I could get a very nice hunting scope with half that money.

I got my shotgun scope here. A Nikon 2-7x32 BDC prostaff for $120. If you are only going to use the scope on one gun BDC is a nice feature. Using Hornady 300 gr SST sabots I only need to use the first hold over dot to make a 240 yard shot.

Excellent customer service, they will give you a new one no questions asked and pay shipping ! The glass is as good as a Zeiss Conquest low end on IMHO and maybe better than Leupold VX3. This one does not have side focus, you have to go 4-16 and $100 more to get that. I'd stay with a 2,5 bottom end tho for hunting. You can get Warne Maxi bases and Lever rings and still be under $600.

I was going to go high dollar and had a NF on back order and am sure it would have been a real winner of a scope. I just said no. I don't make the bucks anymore, I need to save for household stuff and so have to get in line with my practical situation.

So here is what my choices are IMO and stay at 12.5" and shorter on a compact rifle.

1-Burris Timberline series with Obj. Parallax setting $275
2-Vortex Diamonback HP with side focus $400
3-Leupold VX-3 without parallax focus $300-400

Which would you take ? Does a person really need parallax adj. for 250yds and under hunting ? If I kicked that want out, could go even lower on cost. Thanks.

I have 4x fixed power weaver scope on my 270. The scope is outdated, it is over 20 years old. I haven't bought a new scope because I can hit a self healing ball at 250 yards with the old scope. The truth be known people kill thousands of deer with cheap simmons and centerpoint scopes every year. I killed two deer at about 150 yards with my 91/30 equipped with iron sights. I have a Simmons masterpiece scope on my 22 mag. My friend has a high end Leupold on his 300 mag. The truth be known, if you spray painted the labels on the scopes you could not tell the difference. Get a scope you can easily afford. They all have the same issues. The Leupold on a my friends rifle needs adjusting all the time. He spent more on mounts than I spent on the whole rig, plus he took it to a gunsmith to have the scope installed. I just use an inch pound wrench to install my scopes and put my rifles back together, I get way better results at 1/10 the price.

J.B.G I darn sure hear ya. When I got my first rifle way back 44 years ago, it was a Rem. 788 22-250 with some kind of a Weaver, missing the turret caps and it would put every round into an envelope at 300 yds. anytime, anywhere. I paid $50 for it. My buddy and I went halves and shot more coyotes, bobcats and crows then I can remember. Then as the years went by, I started worrying and searching for MOA, 1/2 MOA, 1/4 MOA, getting better, more expensive and no rifle ever really outshot that cheap dinged up 788/Weaver combo.....Enough!!! Trying to get off that bandwagon and just be happy again with a nice rifle, nice scope and some practice time and enjoy it all again. I believe that either the Burris or the Vortex are more than enough and if I want USA built then a nice Leupold and be DONE!!! Go enjoy.

I am ending this stupid thread and I thank all who posted. I know what I need to do and gonna go do it. Audios and God Bless.

leupold VX-R lighted dot at middle of crosshair when you need it for low light deer and varmint hunting. I put the 3-9 40mm on my 7mm-08.Many configuerations available. 499 bucks at oticsplanet plus 5 % off for being a member of this site.I like the firedot 4 reticle personally.

K-5 went with a Leupold VX-3 4.5-14x40 SF 30mm and Talley bases and fixed rings low. Tried to push button on a VX-2 or Vortex but couldn't. Great scopes I am sure, lots of plus reviews here. But happy I went with VX-3 over NF NXS compact just because of savings in cost. Couldn't justify, for what I and how I hunt, that expensive of a scope. Even the VX-3 is too much, but WTH.

2.5x8 vx3 leupold and spend the rest on good mounts and rings. You chose a good scope but in my opinion its a tad large and heavy for a lightweight compact rifle.

Yes the VX-3 2.5-8x36 was on the short list. No SF and wanted a tad more magnification.

The kill is the satisfying, indeed essential, conclusion to a successful hunt. But, I take no pleasure in the act itself. One does not hunt in order to kill, but kills in order to have hunted. Then why do I hunt? I hunt for the same reason my well-fed cat hunts...because I must, because it is in the blood, because I am the decendent of a thousand generations of hunters. I hunt because I am a hunter.- Finn Aagard

Good hunting....Don

I am a hunter also K5As long as I kill either to eat or to protect. Not just to kill. I want a one shot kill and practice to make that a extremely high probability. I won't take an iffy shot, been there done that and learned. I like a rifle or a shotgun or a handgun also as a work of craftsmanship, a piece of art. Just some of the thoughts I have concerning shooting, hunting and enjoying.

Well alright, have a great time, enjoying the outdoors and all it's sounds and sights.

That's a lot more glass than I would've put on that rifle and parallax adjustment is completely unnecessary.

Well to each his own. Some say better glass than rifle needed, some say opposite, some say something else. You know about opinions....

Years ago, I tried the one rifle for all bit. The scope was the Vari X III 4.5-14x. As long as the game was not real close, it worked great. Kinda like turkeys with a turkey choke, sometimes you just gotta let them wander off a little before you shoot. And sometimes you just don't shoot.

I will say that I felt like parallax adjustment was handy for shooting through holes in cover and also for taking head shots.

I sure liked the parallax I had on my Zeiss. Having things in focus and being able to do it quickly is a good thing. At 12.5" it was an inch longer than lesser power range and objective size. But it was the shortest I could find with SF excluding the NF. I will be checking out the SHV NF's when they come out and see what they're all about. But I had a defective prostaff of a friend who asked me to send it into Nikon for him, it's 12.3" and that length looked good on the Win. Compact. So we'll see.
