Im not sure if this is the right thread. But, im looking into buying a colt open top revolver by uberti with the navy grip, and i dont like the brass trigger guard amd back strap. If i also purchase a london navy backstrap and trigger guard made by uberti, will the two pieces be interchangeable? Mainly becaise i dont like the brass on a handgun. But on a uberti winchester 1866, it looks nice. Also i like the grip size on a navy open top and not a army size grip.

The grip frames on the Colt open-top revolvers are finished after the pistol is assembled by hand grinding or filing the edges to match the frame and grip. It is unlikely that you will be happy with simply interchanging trigger guard and back straps although the screw holes should line up. The reason why originals had serial numbers on all the pieces was so they could be ground down to fit then taken apart to be case hardened or blued then reassembled with the correct matching parts.

Suggest Mods move this to Black Powder, as many of the guys there knowlagable about these swaps (yes they work) and can advise.

If possible buy the parts in the white, you can then mate them to your revolver. However, in my experience, the fit is very good with take-off parts.

Note, if your trigger guard is not of the same make as your gun, buy a mainspring screw to be sure threads are alike. In my case, I fit a Uberti trigger guard to my J.P. Sauer & Sohn revolver, so made sure I had a Uberti mainspring screw. Same goes for the butt screw. Common sense, but easily forgotten.

I have done grip frame swaps with Uberti 1873 revolvers and the fit was perfect. Can't speak to the 72.

i noticed that the navy and army grips on colts are different. least to me. and I like the london type grip, and its also a navy grip. I have medium size hands

If you have not bought the gun yet, why not just buy the London model to begin with instead of worrying about swapping grip frames?

There seems to be some confusion in this thread regarding "open top" in the usage of the OP.

Clarification is needed, methinks.
