Got out to the range today and shot 50 rounds through my abolt 270 win and my shoulder is bruised! I loaded some hornady sp 130 and 140 gr with imr 4064. Both bullets group best at 46 gr. the 140 sp best group measured 0.86" at 100 yds. The best 130 group was right under an inch .96". How much better than this can I expect to do for an out the box deer rifle? This was the first time I pulled the rifle out in about 10 years. I had become enamored with bow hunting and decided shooting deer with a rifle was too easy. I am excited that I was able to shoot as good as I did. Do any of you think it's worth looking for alternative powders to try?

Welcome to "The High Road" Wolfmanjack. I think my shoulder would be a bit tender also after 50 rounds. Any time you can squeeze 1" or better out of a standard production rig, I'd say your doing pretty dog gone good.

I have been loading and shooting the .270 win for about 3 decades, including an A Bolt BOSS.

As for powders, I've never cared much for the faster burners like 4064, though I know a few folks use them. Trying to get typical .270 velocities with those powders is tough without having to push the pressure envelope.

If you run through the data, you'll see a lot of loads with IMR-4350, H4350, IMR-4831, H4831, IMR-7828, H1000, 760, and those class powders. And also RL22 and RL19 have really been good for accuracy, though RL22 is almost too slow for 270 win. as far as velocity is concerned.

I'm having to work with the only rifle powder I could get locally which is imr 4064. So ignoring the fact that experimenting is fun, what is there to gain with a bone stock gun besides speed? Would it be reasonable to assume that if I switched powders I would be able to achieve similar groups but with a higher velocity? Could it be an exercise in futility? I'm new to this reloading for rifles thing. Should my current load be sufficient for any whitetail out to 250yds?

Absolutely it is enough for whitetails. I burned a pound of 4064 through my 700 in .270 loading at 46 gr under 130 gr hornady ballistic tips. A few of those rounds found deer, and most fell within eyesight. I didn't care for that powder though and switched back to imr4350. I didn't care for it because it seemed to produce more recoil for some reason.

I have always used IMR4350 in my .270. My factory Rem 700 will put them in little cloverleaves @ 100 if I do my part, so yes you could expect better even though it is a factory rifle. Those bullets are great whitetail droppers too. Good luck and happy shooting.

Great job. Before running off to try new powders, you might want to play with different powder charges to see how that impacts your groups.

I use H100 in my 7 mag, and in my particular rifle, the closer I get to full power loads to tighter it shoots.

Just an idea. Keep having fun.

You'll certainly get deer with that load. If for fun you want to experiment go for it. I might leave the load as is and play with distance to the lands by .010 -.020 either direction to see if things tightened up a bit.

If your happy with that work up, there is no need to change anything considering the accuracy your getting. And that will absolutely put deer down just fine.

But if your enjoying the whole reloading thing, and working up new and different loads, you might want to pick up a slower burner and see what you come up with. Velocity means nothing,, if accuracy is in the toilet, I hope I didn't mislead you in that respect. So considering the groups your shooting with 4064, unless you would like to gain a couple hundred fps while getting similar accuracy results, there is no reason to change powders.
