Just shot my new saiga 7.62x39, It was a blast! I always loved ar's and still do but I had to make a choice with my non existent budget. I was wondering if 3/4 inch - 1-1/4 groups were good for the 25m zero? I am not used to the sights but it gets better grouping than my quals grouping in the military(when I was a weekend warrior). The groups hover around 1" at the 25m. Anyways, just wanted to tell everyone how stoked to have a rifle again!

Hard to go wrong with Saiga. And BTW--Welcome aboard The High Road.

With rudimentary sights, 4 MOA is fine shooting with an AK style rifle. The short sight radius isn't helpful for long range shooting, but an inch at 25 yards is fine.

Ammo plays a part in accuracy, of course. I have nearly 1,000 rounds of Match Grade Silver Bear, and that stuff takes some error out of shooting my MAK-90.

Enjoy that Saiga.

my 5.56 AK does around 2" at 100 with good factory ammo (i do not use its iron sights).. what ammo are you using for 7.62x39?

Shooting wolf and Tulammo. Just did the 25m bzo since the only available range is 30yds and I didn't want to go to the hunting grounds to do a 100yd zero.
Oh, it's unconverted and I intend to keep it in hunting/sporting trim. I just wish I could get a better sporter stock with better ergos like the factory dragunov style poly stock, but I think it would jump into the 922 stuff. I guess I'll just play the "no changes no worries" game.

with wolf ammo i wouldnt expect much better than that.. try some quality factory ammo, id be interested to see how your groups improve, i think hornady makes some match x39 ammo with 123 grain SST bullets, thats one of the reasons AKs have had a reputation of poor accuracy, little if any availability of quality or match ammo for most its life

Try and find some Golden Tiger or Yugo M67. It'll help tighten up your groups. AK's are my 1st passion when it comes to collecting. Yep they're addicting!

Yay! My first post ha ha!

Wolf and Tula is the only thing available at this moment. I will try others if it's available, and more importantly if the price is right. I'm actually very happy
With the 25m results. This was just an uncomfortable prone, wood block supported bzo. Of course, the truth will appear at the 100 yd line. Which is the range I intend to hunt at.

You should convert it back to they way it was originally designed. 922r is no problem, a Tapco G2 trigger group already covers 3 parts, U.S. made pistol grip and brake and you're good to go.

Red Army is available in a couple different flavors. Steel cased, brassed cased copper FMJ, etc. Fiocchi also.

I'm ok with it's configuration for now, money is also a big issue......add that to my misunderstandification of 922r and it becomes easy to just leave it alone.

My problems with the rifle are the sights, trigger(quite bearable actually) and the pistol grip area. I would much like a real pistol grip(922r stuff) or even the dragunov/skeleton plastic stock(922r territory?). I'll try to add pics but I'm not sure how to do those things.

Congratulations on the Saiga and welcome to THR.

Personally I like the Saiga as is. Has an SKS kind of feel to it. Very fun to shoot. Had to add a few pieces of sandpaper on the butt plate to keep it from slipping around on my shoulder and that works fine.

Since I've only shot it once at 100 yards and with the cheapest ammo I can find 4-5 MOA seemed pretty good to me. Love those 10 round mags. Just haven't found any locally.

Come to think of it, the butt was slipping all over the place. I think I'll try the grip tape thing. I was about to order a smg 10 rnd but the shipping was the same as the mag. So I have to do more searching

Can anyone tell me why I would need a rear sight setting below 100m?

he rearmost setting is the AK's "battle zero" designed to put rounds on a human sized torso from 25 yards out to about 300 or so.

My rear sight ramp doesn't have a step up at the rear most setting. It just goes from 300 and down. I just don't get why the drop after 100m setting. I'm guessing that the drop/rise from 0-100m is nil, and not enough to need to move the rear sight when zeroed at 100m setting.

That rifle shoots fine enough for its intended purpose. You will kill whatever is coming at you.

However, unless you live in NY or elsewhere with special "rules", you would want to swap out that stock for something that may be comfortably held on to. Unless you have modified the trigger to a lower pull and less slap, that will also adversely affect accuracy. I live in NY and had to get a "compliant" stock and 1. It is not comfortable at all, and 2. My trigger finger hurts like hell on every shot.

Yeah, I like the way it shoots.

In the pic, the mil target is my m16a2 qual zero groupings. The plates is the saiga x39. The saiga groups seem smaller than the ar. I was feeling confident with my shooting so I was adjusting the sights after every 3rnd group. That's why the point of impact are all over the place on the plates. I still have to fine tune the sights but it's hard to adjust when I'm using a small drill press vice with some sockets to adjust. I also didn't notice any trigger slap I have been reading about, although the trigger does have a lot of slack.
