Just picked up a box of 147 gr 9mm plated Extreme for grins. I usually load their 124 gr at 4.0 of Titegroup and 1.135 OAL. Anyone have a good starting point for the 147 gr, specifically the OAL?
Tendriver I always set my OAL to the longest my chamber, & mags will accept, and adjust from there if accuracy, or function is an issue. I usually look at the books OAL, but rarely use it. I try to find what OAL my firearm likes.
I've been loading 147s the past couple of weeks... 1.155-1.16" works in my SIG and Beretta and S&W CORE. YMMV. Make sure to do the "plunk" and feeding tests before loading a bunch.
3.4 Titegroup works, is pretty clean, and is subsonic if it matters. Hodgdon says 3.2-3.6 grains.
For OAL, I make up several fake bullets at different lengths then find the longest that fits the chamber. Subtract .005 and that will give you a good starting point as far as accuracy goes.
The 147 grain bullet is my standard in all my 9mm guns. I get best results in terms of accuracy and cycling by using N340 and N350. The load and OAL is easily found on various web sites and published data books.
I have used lead load data with regular thickness plated bullets with good results. FWIW, I used 1.155"-1.160" with 147 gr ZCast bullet and tested 3.1-3.5 gr of Titegroup with 3.5 gr producing best accuracy - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=748940
Of course, your barrel/pistol will be the final judge of what will feed/chamber reliably from the magazine as the working OAL/COL.
