So last week i went shooting and shot about 60-70 reloads through my 30-06. I had been working up several loads using imr 4064 and superformance. I had 2 loads that grouped extremely well. 1 was .612 and the other was .640. Afterwards i drove around the lease and i accidentally hit my rifle barrel on a tree. It was strapped in the gun rack on the front of the 4 wheeler and hit hard enough to make it jump out of the rack.

I didn't think much of it and worked up some more loads varying the oal and small variations in powder charges including the identical loads again.

Went shooting yesterday and the same loads wouldn't get better than 3 inches. They also shifted 3 inches left. I don't think it is the scope because it didn't hit the scope. I checked the rings for tightness and they are fine.

Has anyone experienced changes in load results before? I didn't think the barrel was hit that hard, but is there anything else that could explain this?

Gun is browning x bolt 30-06 with Nikon monarch 4-16x42 and browning scope mounts.

No longer group...

Gone Fishing 1--Hmmm. You hit your barrel. First thing I'd check would be the screws holding your receiver and stock together. If the collision loosened them, that might be causing yr problem. Is yr stock bedded? Is the bedding intact? Are the 'scope mount screws loosened or stripped?

Something changed when that collision happened. Your job is to find what the change was and restore it. With groups that "opened up" as you stated, it's probably something that got loose, rather than something that got bent. OTOH, your POI changed too. Mebbe it's both bent and loosened.

Good luck on correcting this problem--I'm sure it's vexing. Pls keep us updated on this. We all will be glad to read a glowing report...

Start with the easiest. Check the scope. Do you have another you can put on the rifle. Are all the mounts.screws tight.

Depending on how the rifle was held the barrel would act as a lever and could damage different components. I would start with stock, bedding and action screws. The scope could have been damaged if the receiver flexed, so, check that. As has been suggested a substitute scope may be worth a try. Check the muzzle for crown damge . It doesn't take much to really affect accuracy. This would cause the poi change also. It is very unlikely that the barrel is bent. Barrels are a tube and tubes are very hard to bend without putting a kink in them. However it is possible. Bent barrels look wierd, for lack of a better term, from the inside. It will appear to somewhat oblong circles in it.

Update
After taking it to a gunsmith. He determined that the barrel was ok. I sent scope back to Nikon and it was replaced free of charge. Go to love that customer service.

I haven't shot it yet but I will report back when I do.

My uncle came to me with his shot out Browning 7mm RM, and asked if me to take a look before he got a new one. I asked him how many rounds down the tube he said he didn't know, but heard they were easy to shoot out.. I know, but factory ammo around $1+ each I doubt it, but will check.

I checked the scope first as one of his family gunsmiths had turned it with turret to left up instead of turrets up and right ?? Scope was tight still 6" groups fliers off the cardboard !! I took the action out of the stock, and screws were just dangling (this was the problem action screws loose) still lots of gunk in barrel channel etc. I cleaned it good for him it had never been cleaned since 1992 ( This was 2012) barrel didn't have as much copper as you would think, still two overnight soakings in wipeout, cleaned entire gun, bolt etc greased locking lugs, and Eezox all metal.

Afterwards 3 shot groups with factory Federal was around 1", the pretty is all gone off the golden antlers, and the shine has done shunned, but it will still hold 1" after the gun has been put thru around 20 years of rain, mud, hits, drops, falls etc only malfunction was loose screws !! I started to locktite them LOL, I just told him check the action screws once a year when checking before deer season (in one ear out the other)

Long story short go over your gun well, clean it up good while you are at it, you will probably find the problem, if not you will have eliminated possible problems.

Sounds like you bent the barrel. Better have a gunsmith check it out ..
Saw that once years Ago on an old ww2 8mm Mauser a friend had. A rebarrel fixed it right up. It was easily seen on his looking thru the bore. Sort of oblong hole rather than round. His bent bad enough there wasn't enough sight adjustment to get it on paper

I think the front bell of the scope was bent. A common cause of point of aim shifting in rifles that fall. That part of the shooting hardware is structurally the weakest. Especially when aluminum tubes are used.

If the objective lens in front is bent a few thousandths inch off its normal axis, the point of aim easily moves several MOA.

As stated, check all action and base screws, scope ring screws. If you shot it 50-60 rounds in one sitting i'd go ahead and clean her too, it won't hurt. I see you already have a new optic so that's a start. Keep us posted. Luck to ya!
