A guy I know has one, not sure if it is from the 50's or 60's, that he wants to use for shooting alligator gar. Do the Belgium rifles have any significant value? Thought about asking him if he would be interested in trading it for a heritage 22 along with a run of the mill 10/22. Would this be considered a decent trade, for my part?

Belgium rifles do carry a premium if in good condition. If the the rear sight is a wheel adjust collectors will flip over it. They are great rifles, but, have to be kept fairly clean to function well. Shooting fish doesn't sound like the best place to use a sa22. The 10/22 will function under some pretty filthy conditions. I always use my guns, but, do not go crawling through muck and briars with the nicest ones. Also, inthe end, reliability trumps looks.

If you can make the trade it would be to your advantage depending on condition.

As stringnut already stated a Belgium made SA 22 would be worth quite a bit if it's in decent condition. I would think you would need something more than a Heritage Arms .22 and a Ruger 10/22 on your part to make that deal work.

Yes, they have value. You need to do a couple of things. Find the serial number. I found mine on the bottom of the barrel right next to the forearm. Next, determine its grade, does it have engraving, etc.

Here is mine, my Dad gave it to me when I was a kid. A "one" owner so to speak. Even though my Dad bought it new for me in 1971-ish, it was made in 1967 and had been on the gun store shelf all that time.

It would be an excellent trade on your part, but if I had the Browning you would need to add a significant amount of cash to make the trade. Not sure of the value of the Heritage ($200?) or a "run of the mill" used 10-22 ($250?), but the Belgium Browning Grade I is probably a $600-750 rifle depending on condition.

I have two and one is a Belgium made (was my Fathers first rifle). If you could get him to take that deal do it this afternoon.

According to him it has a lot of the bluing missing, but the wood is unscratched. He is supposed to get me the serial number before the weekend.

If I had a Belgian Browning .22, I wouldnt take it out on a boat...
+1

A Belgian Browning SA22 has enough collector value that it would be foolish to use it as a fishing gun. Sell it and you could buy five beater 22s and a lifetime supply of ammo.

A life time supply of 22 ammo??

You must only fire a 22 a few rounds every 6 months!!

I meant enough ammo to shoot every gar fish you ever caught, not all the 22 ammo you might ever want to shoot.;)
