Reinstalling the cylinder ...
I've got 2 Pietta 58's ... a blued 8", and a Stainless steel "home-made" shorty (6-5/8").
To remove the cylinder, drop the loading lever, pull the cylinder pin, roll the pistol on it's side (gangsta-style), put your free hand under the cylinder, and pull the...
Im283 ... I'd take him up on it, I just got a used Kirst Konverter, and it's a blast. You could look at it this way too - one day, you could give it to your son or grand-baby!
HOLY SHNIKEYS!!
What imperfections????
Scrat, at 25 hours of labor ... your "income tax rebate" (if you are getting one) probably would not cover 3 of them!!
You coulda just asked "Ford or Chevy", as EVERYONE will have their own OPINION ... for example, In MY opinion, I very much prefer the handling, looks and style of my 1858 Remingtons, so I bought a (used) Kirst Konverter. I am VERY happy with it. I like to shoot it as a ball and cap revolver...
Sorry I haven't posted in a while ... dialup at home, and THR managed to get blocked at work.
Here's the skinny: I'm researching conversion cylinders for my Pietta "1858" Remington New Armies (.44 Caliber). What I'm looking for are better pictures than are offered on Taylors/R&D...
I Cut down a Stainless 1858 Remington
Before:
After:
Used a Hacksaw and Miter Box to cut the barrel, cleaned the rough cut up with a file and emery cloth. Made the new front sight by hand.
1858 Mainspring
I've got 2 1858's. Never had a problem with the first one, but the stainless one I bought myself last year had to have some adjustments made. I opened up the spring slot a tad with a file, and added a lead-in. It's still more of a bear to get in as my other 1858, but not...
I'm out of room for reloaders
Lee makes a nifty little hand press, that would fit in your sock drawer ... and wouldn't displace too many pairs of socks.
Lee also makes the classic loader that takes up even less space.
From the proof marks I can see I'm guessing Uberti?
Bzzzt! You didn't state it in the form of a question ... would have been incorrect anyway. If I'd have taken a picture of the other side, you'd maybe be able to make out the F.lli.Pietta stamp on the barrel.
O.S.O.K. is both right and...
I shot this 12 shot offhand group on Saturday Morning (15 Yards).
24.0 Grains Pyrodex "P"
Wonder Wad (lubed with Bore Butter)
Cornmeal Filler (9mm case full)
Speer .457 Diameter Round Ball
I shot this 12 shot group from a rest on Sunday Morning (15 Yards).
24.0 Grains Pyrodex "P"...
What did I use
I cut the initial slot with the narrow side of a flat (bastard?) file. To cut the dovetail, I bought a cheap $3 needle file set, and ground the teeth off of one side of the triangular file.
Horse Wormer Syringes ... Every 6 months
Actually, the wife worms the horses every 8 weeks. The local Fleet and Farm store didn't have the usual brand on hand, and the syringes aren't gonna be to functional for my needs.
The nice features about the 'butte syringe that I mentioned before are...
The original post was filed too low, partially due to trying to clean it up, so I cut a dovetail, and made another front sight.
Close up:
Here's the Target I shot last night.
First two cylinders were loaded as follows:
32 Grains Goex FFFg
Cabelas Wad
Speer .454 Round Ball
Lube...
never see a BP revolver being cleaned - in all those movies
Ever see the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly? Technically it was a cartridge conversion ... but still good 'ol BP.
Federal Law?
Wow. Most states are not up to par if "Federal law" manades Firearm Safety Training for people born after "1972" ... and $5.00, that won't cover the postage to get the written materials to the instructors. In Minnesota, it's anyone born January 1st, 1981 or later, and it's a...
I found some pdf targets on a website (www.shootmagazine.com), and am a bit puzzled. Three "different" targets, and the ONLY difference is one says 800 yard, one says 900 yard, and one says 1000 yard. All three are formated on a standard 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. Obviously, they should be...
Cleaning Rod
I MADE the cleaning rod. Not too hard if you have access to a lathe and 1/4 inch diameter brass rod (available at any hardware store). I wanted a segmented rod that looked similar to an an old one I saw ... somewhere (don't remember where). I got all the pieces cut to length...
Paid to do the mods ...
I "bribed" a machinist to modify the cylinder and, at the time, the shop was really slow. I needed a favor, and he needed a favor ... gotter done! The brass stock I used for the sight was scrap, and the same machinist showed me the basics of manually using the...
A month or two ago, I shortened the barrel on my Stainless 1858 Pietta Remmington. I hand cut a dovetail, and made a new sight from brass. I was not happy with the sight, as it ended up being too short (shooting way high) and the angles weren't quite right for the dovetail. Two weeks ago, I...
DaveP
Yes, that's what I meant ... a SINGLE "double safe" position. Some may think me (forgive the language) "anal", but I AM a Certified Minnesota DNR Firearms Safety Instructor!!!
