I made this box myself. It took me about 25 hours to complete it. Everything is solid walnut.
I am pleased with end result. I thought I would share. No power tools were used in this project, and it is all hand made only. Little imperfections are desirable. I think character is there....what do you guys think?

HOLY SHNIKEYS!!

What imperfections????

Scrat, at 25 hours of labor ... your "income tax rebate" (if you are getting one) probably would not cover 3 of them!!

Impressive. Very authentic looking. I envy guys with woodworking skills.

Looks like a craftsman job. Very nice work. where did you get the lock? also how do you wrap the box dividers? are they glued onto the base of box? I am interested in making a case also. so far I have the box made and lid attached in same manner as show in photo. have not stained wood or done any thing to interior, other then layout a few mock up option. any suggestions or tips would be welcome.

used poplar as a test run. not confident enough in my skill yet to use walnut, but I learned a few things thus far. mostly that it would be cheaper to buy a case. But what the heck I would be more proud if I can make a nice one on my own. My new goal is to do 1/2 as good as SIGP2101

ya i bought one on ebay a while back. I really got it for the measurments. Thats going to be my summer project.

Very nice, SIG2101. You do good work!

No one, alive, has ever called me a perfectionist. Well, okay, no one at all, has ever called me that (although, the term "Obsessive/Compulsive" has been bandied about, upon occasion. :uhoh: ) Even so, your results look alarmingly unflawed.

THANKS for encouraging feedback so far guys. I will try to answer all your questions and concerns sometimes next week. Pretty busy this weekend. This was purely labor of love, and to be honest with you I never gave much thought putting a price tag on box like this.
Stay tuned. Happy shooting, and keep your powder dry!

Very impressive. :D I'd love to do something like that for my remmy, but I lack most of the tools and probably the skill. :(

Dividers are glued to the bottom of the box as they are made from same wood as the rest of the box. That way you get really sturdy dividers. Than you lay felt at the bottom, and after that you tailor wraps around each divider and glue them. I find this most time consuming part in entire project. As for the box itself my advice is to go with the best possible wood you can get, and keep your chisels really, really sharp all the time. There is no need to practice on less quality wood because end result will please you more, and it is easier to work with more dense wood. My next one will be mahogany Luger box.

Lock work is solid brass and nothing on this box is made in China. Source of this quality brass parts I’ll keep it for myself if you don’t mind. ;)Felt as well is only genuine wool felt.

Now how much for 3 of them.

If you really serious we can always work out something. But be aware that price can not be anywhere near cheap boxes as on eBay.

Beautiful box, and very authentic! Wonder how much it would cost to get one built for my Walker (hint, hint)...

Here's a thread you might be interested in if you want to replace the label on your cap box: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=275301

Once again, excellent job. I'm jealous...

Thanks for the hint, really appreciated, let me know how much you are interested, and THANKS for the labels.

shieeet i wish i had the 25 hours of time to devote

Actually I was doing it at pace one hour per day. I have full time job, and two small kids.:banghead: Only possibility for me to do this was between 9 and 10 pm. I have a wife as well :cuss: you know.

But for all of you guys who would be interested in such a project please PM – me. If I could make a list of what you want I would be able to work out the price for you, and timing. So far I have measurements for 1849, 1851 and P 08. All others you would have to provide measurements.

Thanks for kind words all of you!

I took my box to the gun show last weekend, just to get first hand feedback and be able to talk to the people about price. It pays off at the end because I sold my box for $200. I think that was fair price for custom box like this not extremely expensive for the quality built in. Any ways, I will treat this as base model with this base price. All other options like different wood, different hardware, lock work, inletting etc, will be priced accordingly and discussed with potential customer.

All of you interested PM-e or sent E-mail at [email protected]

Thanks

Welcome to THR, Sig!:D

That display is so nicely done that I thought it was a family heirloom dating back to the mid nineteenth century. Then I read your description.:D

That is a true piece of art right there.
