    2024 Hunting Picture Thread

Now you're bringing back old memories. In years past I worked in the oil & gas industry and spent a lot of time in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I always had a rental car and if I got free early in the afternoon I would head it east for Sidney, Nebraska and at the time Sidney had the only Cabela's store...

    2024 Hunting Picture Thread

This is one of my whitetail bucks from the 2023 season and I am happy to get him on the wall. I do my own taxidermy work and it takes a while to get everything going in the right direction. The buck is mounted on a Competitors Choice semi upright form, Brad Eppley nose, Tohekin eyes, and Ozark...

    Light Triggers for Light Rifles

I was shooting my Mission Sub 1 crossbow today and it has about and 8 pound trigger pull with a long stroke. I shoot it really well from a rest but as I pull the trigger I find myself saying wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, until it fires. I was practicing at 56 yards which is the...

Scope Height vs. Cheek Weld ?

In my opinion the height of the scope over the bore may not be nearly as important for shooting at close range but for long range shooting the cant of a rifle with a high mounted scope will increase the deviation of the bullet either right or left. What I am saying is that if the shooter...

    Pre-64 m70 build about finished

I've been carrying a rifle like that longer than you are old and at one point I had 5 of them in 30-06. Sad to say I am down to only 2 now. My favorite accurate load for shooting targets and hogs is the Sierra 150 grain GameKing in front of 57 grains of Reloader 17. For deer and other large...

    Light Triggers for Light Rifles

I am basically a hunter and I shoot steel targets at long range with 8 pound bolt action rifles and a 2 pound trigger is just about right for me. I don't want anything lighter than 2 pounds because shooting with gloves in cold weather makes it harder to control the trigger.

= Verified with PV/Alliant customer service = Alliant to suspend canister powders significantly - Time for comparable powder substitutions again

I really like Alliant powder and it is still available at my local gun store priced about 20% higher than Hodgdon. . The latest that I have read is that it will be in limited quantities in 2024 and what is available will have a 10% increase in price effective 1-1-24. My favorite Alliant...

Scope Height vs. Cheek Weld ?

I think it may take several tries for you to figure out what is best for you and it won't happen with just one rifle. Every time I have had one favorite rifle set-up it has changed in a few years. I am a hunter and I have different stock requirements than a target shooter. I started out with...

    Special Thanks to Timney Triggers

I have been using Timney Triggers for over 50 years and never had a problem with one until this past month. I currently own 8 Model 70 rrfles with Model 401 triggers and one started to acting up in a big way. The pull was inconsistent moving back and forth from hard to weak and at times I...

Deer feed - Corn vs Creep Feed

I put out whole corn, AntlerMax, wheat midds, and 3/4 20% protein cubes this past month and the animals are coming to the feed and acting happy. I had three game cameras out and each one of them had several thousand pictures in 21 days. 2024 looks to be a good year. The whole corn is the...

Can a bad trigger help you be a better shooter?

I never shoot from a solid rest so all of my shooting is done with an unsteady rifle and a bad trigger will not work for me. My style of shooting is to put pressure on the trigger and finish the trigger pull when the reticle is perfectly aligned with the target. My onboard computer has to know...

Tell me why I shouldn’t get a Browning BLR in .308.

I owned a Browning BAR in 308 several years ago so and I have some idea of what a BLR is like. First, if you are an eastern woods hunter who isn't used to shooting a bolt action rifle with a good trigger the BLR will probably work for you. If you are shooting deer at 200 yards a good bolt...

Help me understand... a 10lb rifle 'worth' it's weight in gold?

I agree. I think his thumb is on the left side of the barrel. Why he wrapped his fingers back under the forearm is strange. Maybe the photographer didn't like the look and told him to hide his fingers.

Help me understand... a 10lb rifle 'worth' it's weight in gold?

I know the man who owns this rifle here in Oklahoma and I have had the pleasure of holding it in my hands and if my memory serves me right I held it in the late 1980's. I asked George in April a year ago if he still had the rifle and he said he did. My wife and I watch the movie Out of Africa...

What new rifles are most exciting to you this year? Or over the past year?

One cartridge that has peaked my interest in the past year is the 7mm PRC designed by Hornady. I am a fan of the 280 Remington with a 22 inch barrel and I could never quite get into the 280 AI because it has a 40 degree shoulder and is usually chambered in a 24 inch barrel. If I was going for...

    Beloved 30-06 Anyone?

I've been hunting with a 30-06 for more years than most of the High Road members are old. At one point in time I owned 6 of them but sad to say I'm down to only two. My favorite I call my "Hammer Gun" because it really hammers anything I shoot at. I have a good supply of Sierra and Nosler...

My favorite: Rem 700 BDL- Stainless, .270 Win, with after-market stock, Leupold 3-9x scope, epoxy/pillar bedded. Yes, it shoots as good as it looks!

I know the feeling of having a hunting rifle that you like and some hunters go their entire lifetime and never find a rifle they are happy with. Your choices in putting that rifle together really worked. Good rifle, good cartridge, good scope and good recoil pad. A+

    IMR4350 availability in todays market

I live in eastern Oklahoma and IMR 4350 has been available for the past three years at my lgs and selling for $55 per pound and that includes sales tax. Also, I was at the Tulsa Gun Show Saturday and I noticed a table selling IMR 4350 for $55 per pound. Hodgon powders seem to be more available...

Deer feed - Corn vs Creep Feed

During March I mixed whole corn and creep feed in one feeder and corn and AntlerMax in another feeder. The feeder with the creep feed had mostly doe and young bucks, and the feeder with the corn and AntlerMax had all the big bucks. The second time I put feed out I did the same thing and the...
