Transitioning from irons to optics for carry, and I'd like to convert one of my single-stack 9mm 1911s to take an optic instead of buying yet another pistol to training and range-work.
Who does this sort of conversion well? I'm willing to commit to a particular footprint and not do plates, or...
I'm thinking of doing something terrible.
2 guns:
Commander sized 1911s
Steel frames
Ed Brown style bobtail
One is a Nighthawk in 10mm, the other is an Ed Brown FX2 in 45ACP. The FX2 is cheaper and has the RMRcc attached (the other just has an MOS plate). I like Ed Brown. A lot.
But I've...
Picked one of these up today. Don't have strong opinions yet, but I thought I'd post this while my thinking is still clear on it.
What is it? It's an Officer-sized(ish) 1911, in 9mm, that takes Glock mags and has a capacity of 15 rounds.
Why'd I buy it? What's its purpose? I'm trying to...
I'm trying to make the transition from irons to pistol optics because I'm finally willing to admit to myself that I have old eyes. In that pursuit, I put an optic on a double-stack 9mm 1911ish pistol yesterday.
It's weird, but I'm serious about it, and I think I can convert to the different...
As mentioned in another thread, I bought a KDS9c with the intent of putting an optic on it and seeing if my old eyes can finally adopt to what appears to be a better way of aiming. Especially with bifocals.
So I'll lay out my growing thoughts on this pistol over a couple of weeks. I'll add...
I keep hearing about the advantages of optics on pistols, but the one pistol I have (a Performance Center M&P 45 Shield 2.0) with its GT red dot was...ok, I guess. But I was always slower with the red dot than I was with the standard sights.
Now, I've been shooting iron sights on pistols for a...
I'm getting older, and while the EOTech holosights used to be fine with my astigmatism, now they're just not.
So I was going to look for a SpectreDR 1-4 for a rifle to replace the EOTech, but all the guntubers say it's outdated and there are better options.
So, what are the better options? Is...
I'd like to start with the statement that I'm not looking for a caliber war regardless of how fun those might be.
Really, I'm trying to update my understanding of appropriate cartridge based on modern research. I made some of my initial opinions in the 1980's and 1990's (as did my instructors)...
Just bought a new Wiley Clapp 3" GP-100 with a 7 round cylinder. Love the feel and the sights, seems like a good gun.
Today I went and shot it with some cheap 38 SPL ammo (125gr TMJ) and some Remington .357 125gr SJHPs. The problem I'm running into is this:
Sometimes the trigger pull gets...
So I’m pretty happy with this:
I trained on M16s in the army, and I’ve taken week-long courses where I fired an AR or a Scar, and I’ll readily admit that the ergonomics of the AR are almost perfect.
But…
I’ve never liked the .223, and AR10s are just…not what I’d hoped they’d be. My favorite...
I have a pie-shaped 5+ acre plot whose tip extends down into the swamp. I have a pistol range there that directs into the edge of the pie into the swamp. Physically I'm shooting down, and the nearest building per google maps is a property at 10 o'clock from that position about 1800 yards up...
One of my dad's friends left this at my father's house for me.
This belonged to his father, who was a Naval Aviator in World War 2. This was his issued sidearm, and it's apparently been sitting in its holster next to one box of ammunition since he left the Navy. Since nobody in the family...
It was around this time in 2002 when THR started up. We're finally old enough to drive, but I'm very pleased with how we're approaching adulthood.
Thanks to all of you for being a part of all that makes THR great. :D
So I'm reasonably familiar with AR pattern rifles, though all my experience is with 5.56mm rifles.
I found a deal I couldn't turn down on an AR10 from Palmetto State Armory ($600 AR10s? Seriously?), and I decided to disassemble the bolt carrier group and lube things properly during commercials...
Searching shows that folks love Brenneke slugs, but those things seem to cost $2 each, and that's a bit excessive.
I'm looking for recommendations for a solid "general purpose" 12 gauge slug that can group well out of a smoothbore, and that's not so expensive that I can't train with it...
I bought an upper that was lacking the bolt carrier group and charging handle. I bought a "milspec" BCG that was on sale, and when it arrived I noticed that the bolt is a lot tighter than I'm used to.
Typically I expect to be able to push the bolt in, flip my wrist, and have the bolt go to...
I don't understand the low end of the scope market. As far as I can tell there are dozens of companies selling scopes made in China to different specifications. They all look the same. What I'm pretty sure of is this:
They are made to different quality levels
The companies that sell them...
I want to compile a list of companies who are taking an anti-gun stance or an anti-NRA stance. I won't put the list here, but if y'all would help me by linking to articles documenting these stances that would be outstanding. :)
So this is the year I will finally go to some PRS shoots in my region, which means I'll probably make a fool out of myself as I (re)learn the arts of target identification and wind reading at ranges up to 1,300 yards or so. But I've got a good gun, and I'd like to be reloading ammunition that's...
