I actually thought of that when I was typing the original post...
I could argue that it might be easier to shim the new press than to re-adjust 20 dies. But then an astute person would just say, "then just swap your 9mm dies to the new press, dummy". And they would be right.
No great...
Thanks for that link, that's perfect. Except I need to make 5 rather than 1...
I've also been considering buying an LnL bushing for my Rockchucker, but I haven't bothered because of the interchangeability issue. This is encouragement to do that as well.
I just bought another LnL ap press so that I could dedicate one to 9mm, since it's the only caliber I really shoot in high volume. I was disappointed that when I mounted my dies to the new press, that they were adjusted too low and the ram would not raise up completely.
Does anyone know a...
I've never had mine out, but I have had to adjust them. They are held in and adjusted by one screw each side. I suppose you might be able to count the turns as you screw them all the way in, then replicate that position if/when you decide to reinstall them.
You're right though, I wouldn't...
I believe the RCBS is sold in both auto and manual indexing configurations, and the parts can be switched out easy enough.
I have a LnL, and the auto-indexing can easily be defeated by removing the ratcheting pauls that advance the shellholder.
Thanks for the input Aaron, we're on the same page. Basically what I'm going to do is buy a single shot shotgun, use the barrel and throw everything else out. Of course I'll use the receiver to get dimensions/ measurements for my design but the final product will be different enough from the...
I am familiar with the use of the F1 to "make" an sbr from an existing firearm. Now I want something along these lines: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=657282
But I would like to build the receiver from scratch so that it would be classified as an AOW rather than an SBS. I...
I did something similar to this on my A2 stock:
http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2030639
The only thing I did differently was I drilled the hole straight through the stock just underneath the buffer tube. Then I welded two QD cups to a spacer back to back...
Just for a bit more background, I have an old farmer telling me I can shoot on his farmland where he's always shot & hunted coyotes. I don't know anything more at the moment, except that it's probably typical South Texas farmland which is perfectly flat, usually divided into sections, with...
I have some farmland available for shooting, but of course there is no backstop available. I can get a lay of the land from satellite view, but I want to know what my minimum distance should be from any roads, etc.
I would be shooting .308 out of my truck bed, so the muzzle is ~5ft from the...
Gotcha. 308 isn't very popular at the matches I go to, so I'm unlikely to pick up other guys' brass anyway. But to be sure, I do plan on marking my cases somehow.
jmorris,
Your method seems to give the best of both worlds as far as volume and accuracy. From what I understand, the X-Die is not the best for neck uniformity, and thus a person may give up some accuracy with it.
But I'm thinking for my needs, I will process all the brass once through...
Clark, thanks for the pic.
I can't see exactly how the shell holder works. It looks like you clamp the base of the shellholder in the vice, then use the vice grips to lock and unlock the case? How far do you have to turn the lock to get the brass in/out?
That's pretty slick, the only...
I have used the Uniflow and the similar Hornady. I haven't studied their consistency closely, but both seem to work just fine. I do prefer the extra features of the Hornady though. Mainly the ability to keep multiple plungers set for different loads and quickly swap them out
From what I've read on the RCBS X-die, once the cases are trimmed short initially users have reported getting many loads (10 or so) without the need to trim, and by that point it's time to retire them anyhow.
No doubt it is still a good idea to spot check, however.
I'm going to start reloading bulk rifle soon: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=662741
I will have to resize, trim, and process primer pockets before I even start. I think I've settled on just reaming the primer pockets. Works well for me on the occasional crimped 9mm brass that I...
It should be a sub MOA rifle. And I will be loading good loads for it as well. But for probably 80% of my shooting, 2MOA is sufficient.
You do bring up a good consideration though. I'll stay away from steel cases or steel jacketed projectiles to be kind to my barrel/ action. But apart...
I'm awaiting the arrival of my 308 AR, and I would like to have some plinking/ blasting ammo ready for it once it gets here. I'm looking for bulk brass and projectiles, and am willing to buy by the couple thousand.
The options I have seen for brass are:
Wideners: $250/2000...
Thanks for all the replies.
First of all, I don't mean to sell my 270 short. One reason I don't like hunting with it (and surely many will disagree with this line of thought) is it has a fair amount of sentimental value, and I hate dragging it through brush, banging it on deer blind ladders...
