Seems like 170 grains of JSP over 2000 FPS will achieve many things.:p
Seriously though, the one time I've hunted where someone else was using something other than a .223/.243/.308 bolt or bolt milsurp (the usual), the .30-30 (lever) was one worthy of note. He was taking similar shots as me...
I've taken some decent sized boar with simple shoulder hits with the cheap "made for rifle" 240 grain JSP .44 Magnums and 1 ounce 12 gauge slugs. They often just fold up on the spot. .30-30 seems to work the same too from those I've witnessed.
Head shots always seem too iffy to me (other than...
I can only give you my experience:
I only use a scope on small stuff, like rabbits (.22LR); at 100 yards their heads are mighty small and the tips of all the front sights I've seen are bigger than such at that range!
For boar, open sighted .44 Magnum Handi and Foster slugs from shotguns...
O, and another question,
Is it possible to load such down to the noise and power level of say a .22LR or even a .22 Magnum rifle, just for very informal plinking? I know you only need enough powder to get the ball out of the barrel, but has anyone really done research on low powered loads?
Thanks for your opinion. It does seem that the 128 grain ball would be quite iffy if there's any rib and other bone involvement; especially as it's soft lead. I have no doubt that a decent shot will do it, but there's sometimes a slight movement between a decent shot and a bone hit, and throw...
O, and would said .433 ball be decent on midsized boar? I'm guessing a shoulder hit would be a no-no, but a typical heart shot quartering away would be the best bet?
Only used 12 gauge slugs (1 ounce Foster) and 240 grain .44 Magnum from a Handi on them (shoulder hits worked with these, but...
Thanks for that info there on the ball and ball before the powder (ha).
Hornady has .433 roundballs; I'm guessing that'll be ok with a patch? I just have to let the gunshop know what to order in for me (I can use the 'net, but I'd rather support them).
I'll definitely read up on what the...
First blackpowder front stuffer, so an utter newbie.
I know most of the basics from watching YouTube videos on loading and firing safely, in addition to cleaning (plus a nice little pamphlet I have on blackpowder shooting).
The question is, what type of ball should I use? It's...
They look "handy", especially with a short barrel. I can see walking through thick brush with one, with it on a sling and a machete in hand. You can drop the machete and then quickly fire a close up shot at something dangerous.
I walk through a lot of brush, and I can see the use for one...
oldfool,
That's why I say a double barrel break action for the new shooters who want something for defense; it's easy to see if it's loaded or not, easy to load/unload it, and they point very well when shouldered (as do most long arms). Safe and effective, and it won't take that long to learn...
Old anti-tank rifles. Lots and lots of streamlined steel.
My absolute favorite is the old 14.5mm PTRD bolt gun. Some would say it's damn ugly, but I love the steel tube-like basic construction, and throw in the large caliber round, and it's awesome to me (plinking steel targets, like cars, at...
18 (12 years ago), as soon as I was old enough to get a license here.
I bought two at once:
CZ-100B, .40 CAL, semi-auto pistol
CZ 452-2E ZKM, .22LR, bolt-action rifle
Stoeger Coach Gun (double barrel, side by side), 12 gauge. I think they're around $350 new nowadays. Use the rest of the money on ammunition; light birdshot for practice, and buckshot for defense [and the occasional practice round to feel a full power load].
Simple to use, especially for...
DM~,
One thing: .44 Magnum from a rifle will expand and fragment just as well as a .30-30 with the same type of bullet within its effective range, which means it'll make a bigger wound there too. A 240 grain JHP/JSP at 1900 FPS makes a devastating wound due to fragmentation and expansion on...
Hardware,
Yeah, it does, but said residue won't pose a problem. Just wipe it out before you shoot with a dry patch, and you're good to go.
O, and to add: in the OP's case, the WD-40 loosened the actual fouling from the bore, which revealed the pitting underneath. It's a common thing to see...
- WW1 or 2 era Anti-tank rifle. The Mauser 13mm and Boys .55 are somewhat common here in Oz. When I see one for sale, they're always snapped up by the wealthy. One day I hope to get one.
- Barrett .416 bolt gun. They're very expensive, but I'd love to have one to plink wrecked cars at 1 KM...
rori,
But has the .30-30 taken an elephant and similar game reliably? :P I'd like to see a .30-30 shoot through a buffalo too. :P All cartridges have their pluses and minuses. If you want to hit that whitetail deer at 200 yards, you'd of course use a .30-30, but if you wanted to whack that...
