I got a Star-B. It's not a bad gun. But when you can get a RIA 9mm for $350, don't hesitate. These old-clunkers (Star) get expensive real quick. Then you go thru 500 rounds before you can trust them.
Get a new RIA
Go to Gun Broker or Rock Island auctions and see the price. But, I have never seen any of these mausers bring big bucks. I got a beautiful broomhandle, worth maybe $2,000. If I took it to a dealer, maybe they would give me $750.
Buy a box of 32s and shoot it. It's a fun gun
Getting the gun out fast, without shooting yourself, and with no jams is 90% of the battle. It's just a matter of going to the range and practice practice practice.
I carry a 32 seecamp, and a Sig 232. Both are DA/SA with no safetys, and my target is 7 feet away. I am a great believer in...

As far as the 'Micro Nines'...
A Walther PPK is a 'Sweet gun' - I carry a sig 232 (similar to your ppk) - I will go for reliability over caliber any day of the week. And all these 'Wonder micro-nines' want big break-in periods, with expensive ammo.
The esthetics, the point and shoot, the feel, reliability, etc are for gun people. Glocks maybe better for 'police types', but plastic and striker fired, don't ring my bell
Most self defense shootouts will happen close. As far a 22, maybe if I was going 'Toe to toe' with a 12 pound toothless cat, then I would choose a 22. The simple fact is that the 22 has a 15% dud rate, and recycle the slide badly. I paid $350 for a Ruger pistol (Mark 3 - 22/45) and it's a POS...
