ruger 22/45 seems to have some rough controls

Hello everyone,
I recently bought a ruger 22/45 lite. I've field stripped it a few times to try to get familiar with the piece and after a lot of help on the internet (including some archived threads here - thanks YZGUY) I was able to get past my main hang ups (problems 2 and 4 here: http://www.1bad69.com/ruger/field_strip_pcs.htm ).

My question is that when I pull back on the bolt, it is really hard to pull. probably as tough, if not tougher than my 9mm XDM. Also, the button to release the bolt when it is locked back and i insert a magazine is very difficult to press. Sometimes i need to use a seperate hand. Should this be difficult? I figure it should take some effort to keep it from closing by accident, but I thought I should easily be able to do it with my thumb. Any thoughts?

One thought I did have, maybe with all the handling I took off too much oil? I wouldn't think that would make a difference, but that would be an easy fix. I just wanted thoughts before I start messing with things. I've got it back to together and would like to keep it that way till I can try it out.

Pull back on the bolt, push the release button down and let the bolt go. Releasing the bolt with just the button will wear the corner off the bolt stop and the bolt will fail to lock back on empty.

Thanks, I'll admit I hadn't thought about that. Is that something I should be doing with my XDM as well? I'm assuming that principal is the same with both. Thanks!!!

Is the bolt difficult to pull back with the hammer back? Or just the first time after the hammer is down?

Mine is stiff with the hammer down, but very smooth with the hammer cocked.

You might also consider removing the spring and detent from the slide stop... that way it will work by gravity like all the previous ruger Mark series. You can then slingshot the bolt also.

First thing I did when I received my 22/45s. was to remove the bolt release detent and spring. Gives me the option of using my thumb or the method that I prefer...pulling the bolt back and releasing it.

Also 86d that silly mag "safety" cutoff and installed a TandemKross bushing.

I think this is a little over my head, but I appreciate the replies. I'll read up on it, but I'm not sure I'm ready to go making modifications.

It is normal. Ruger Mark pistols are tight when new. Give it some range work, it will loosen up. Oil or lightly grease the bolt body.
