I did not buy the stand because I use the Inline Fabrication quick change system. I have a four inch overhang on by bench, and the top is 1-¾ inches thick. When I got the MEC all set up I found that I could use the primer catch tray by installing iy sideways underneath the overhang...I can live...
I'm sold on Imperial Sizing Wax. Just keep a dab of ISW on your fingertips as you feed the brass into the press and you're all set.
That "spray" step can be such drudgery.
Funny you should ask. I just unboxed my new Marksman and I am mightily impressed. It is solidly built, not too big but pretty heavy, and the cycling is the smoothest I've ever experienced. I placed it next to my Forster Co-ax (which it will replace) and the MEC is even silkier than that.
If I...
I'd have to say the LabRadar chronograph. It's not cheap, but this machine has completely spoiled me in a number of ways.
First, it's very versatile. It will give you velocities at five distances (of your choosing) from the muzzle for each and every shot. Second, it seems to be very accurate...
For me it wasn't a piece of equipment but a discovery: that the majority of problems with presses can be attributed to a single system, the priming system. Once the lightbulb went off in my head that it didn't make sense to use a piece of equipment designed to exert tons of pressure to seat a...
I've discovered a little tactic that takes the sting out of paying Cabela's prices: their gift cards are sometimes available on EBay for 80¢ on the dollar. Whenever I find them I buy a few fifty dollar cards for forty bucks a piece. That makes Cabela's prices quite a bit closer to what you can...
I bought my last two cases of 9mm for 14¢ per round after rebates and free shipping. One case was Federal American Eagle 115 gr, the other was WWB 115 gr. I'm on the mailing lists of most of the major ammo / firearms sellers and when there's a good sale I stock up. I agree with the idea that you...
Reloading bottleneck rifle cases on a progressive press can be done, but it requires some additional thought and some minor adjustments to the process you'd use for bulk handgun cartridge reloading.
1. When sizing big rifle cases, a moment of "dwell time", where you pause at the top of the...
This has been an excellent give-and-take on a somewhat frustrating situation: we all know exactly what we mean, but find that there isn't a single word to capture it. When I asked the question I was pretty sure I'd have a head-slapping moment...someone would casually come up with the term I'd...
There are only about six answers here that are responsive to the question asked: Hot, Unsafe (or Not Safe), Ready, Charged, Unknown, and Not Clear. Again, I'm not looking for range commands, or definitions...I need a single word or phrase for use in a written document that spells out our range...
I am re-writing the rules for our gun club, and need some help. Specifically, I need a term for a firearm that is not demonstrably and visibly "Safe".
We make a distinction between "Safe" and "other" firearms when specifying how and when they can be handled. Some examples of a "Safe" firearm...
I just got the firmware update and the app. Everything is working as advertised.
For those having problems pairing the app and the LabRadar: you may have missed the part in the instructions where it tells you not to do a conventional Bluetooth pairing with your phone. Instead, you open the app...
Don't get a whole new set of dies...just get additional seating dies. I have two or three seaters for ever caliber I reload. I number them with a sharpie, then keep notes on my iPhone about which numbered die seats which bullet.
I maintain saved searches on eBay for seater dies, and find that...
I shoot revolver matches at 70 yards using cast bullets in .44 Mag and find that trimming cases gives me a much more consistent roll crimp and improves accuracy. I wouldn't do it for any taper crimped cartridges, but for roll crimping it makes a difference.
I dump them on a big cotton bath towel, gather up the four corners, and toss them around for a few seconds. That dries the outsides and empties any residual water out of the insides. Then I just spread the towel out on a table in the shop and let the brass sit there overnight. It's dry and...
I had assumed the opposite: that the grooved bullets, being a tad longer for the same profile and weight, might be more accurate. The same effect is sometimes found where hollow points, being somewhat longer for a given weight, can be more accurate than ball.
I'm extremely happy with the RCBS lockout die. The instructions are a little obtuse, but there's really only one adjustment possible, and after a few tries you can reset it for a different load in about a minute. It has only saved me one time, but that was enough.
I think it's important to remind new reloaders that with semi-wadcutters the portion of the bullet forward of the shoulder is just hanging there in empty space once the round is chamberd. The pistol really doesn't care about that portion of the bullet since it will never touch the rifling...
