CCW poll: Charter Arms .44 spl vs Ruger SP101 .357 mag

GunBlasts.com had a god review of the Charter. However, I looked at a Charter 44 Bulldog at the gunshop recently, and I could not get the cylinder open. Neither could the store clerk who just put it back in the case after I said I wasn't interested. I have the SP101 as my main CCW.

How would you have defended yourself in this instance?

IMHO The risks associated with going to places like amusement parks, fairs, and carnivals far outweigh the entertainment benefit of those places. The State Fair of Texas is a prime example. I spent two years working in that pest hole when I was young and stupid, and I have never gone back. Even...

    Why a Revolver?

When I'm old and crippled by arthritis, I may not be able to run the manual of arms on the semi of the day, but I bet I can still tape the trigger of my SA revolver back and fan the hammer pretty effectively.

Ruger Single Action .45LC for back country gun?

The Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt will do anything Joe Average will ever need to to do with a handgun. Get one, learn to shoot it, and go forth in confidence.

FDIC Staffing Up to Handle Bank Closures (No Joke)

Bringing Back the Topic If there is any kind of run on the banks, there will be a break down of social order, and I would expect a severe increase in both street and organized crime similar to that described in the Argentina Meltdown diary. Agreed cash at home may not be worth as much, but...

FDIC Staffing Up to Handle Bank Closures (No Joke)

My Mrs. has been watching the news quite closely. She's from Russia and lived through the collapse of the Soviet Govt. and the devaluation of the Ruble that immediately followed. She sounds a lot like my Great Grands describing 1929, and she's more than a bit concerned that the US Dollar could...

    Any TX CCW holders?

Kind of depends on how backed up they are. Go online and look: http://www.texasonline.state.tx.us/NASApp/txdps/chl/common/jsp/welcome.jsp My last renewal took ~60 days. That was Feb 07

need reference - klinton era questionnaire to military re: disarming americans

"Grey Ghosts of the Confederacy" If any of you doubt the Feds would order the Army to fire on the US Citizenry, and that the Army would obey orders, you need to read the book above. I details the "war" waged against the citizens of Missouri: Murder Unlawful confiscation of personal...

Surviving Gunshot Wounds In The Old West

It also re-emphasises that a lot of trauma survival is mental more than physical. Plenty of modern folks have died of survivable wounds, and plently of other carried on with seemingly impossible wounds simply because they decided that they would live. Years ago I read an account of a 70-ish...

Surviving Gunshot Wounds In The Old West

Prior to the general adoption of the conical bullet, a great many gunshot woulds were survivable because the roundball tended to push things like intestines out of the way rather than tear through them like the conical bullets would. The Minnie' ball would also splinter large sections of bone...

8 year old girl stabbed during break-in.

Disturbing, yes, but nothing that is uncommon enough to be surprising. Sad that the family responding to their little girl's screams didn't take something more formidable than bare hands.

    Black Powder For Self Defense?

Damien, Drop me an email. I have a good collection of articles that explain the care and feeding of cap-n-ball revolvers that I can share. All of the material is well written, and most importantly, safe.

    My Friend's (rounda)bout with NICS

This is why I am buying more and more cap-n-ball pistols. They may be slow to reload. They may lack the power of modern weapons. However, they will work on BGs, and I don't have to put up with the NICS crap.

    NAA Pug

Thanks Camper! I guess I should have looked at the home page before diving right into the "Firearms" link where I thought all of their products would be listed. Back on topic. I'm now trying to figure out what advantages the Pug offers over the Black Widow. Other than a shorter barrel...

Converting over to only Revolvers. Advice

I used to swear by the semi-auto as the best defense gun you could have until one bad day when something changed in the way my support hand was wrapping around my primary hand. I am a southpaw, and under recoil my support hand fingers were causing my trigger finger to activate the magazine...

    Are They Secretly Illegal?

Black Powder to the Rescue! You can avoid all of this nonsense by teaching your kids to shoot using black powder guns. At 18 you can buy/own a percussion revolver. (Wish I'd known that when I was 18. :banghead:) IIRC, removable stocks for percussion pistols are still legal. No minimum...

    Basic Combat Load

I was working at BassPro yesterday evening, and I was tasked with shifting several pallets of shotgun shells one case at a time. Somewhere between tired and painful I got to thinking about the debates that often spring up on THR regarding the virtues of various firearms in a SHTF scenario...

    SP101 pocket carry

Pleated-front khaki slacks and an Uncle Mike's pocket holster do pretty well for me until I sit down and the pants go tight across my thigh. Never had anyone comment and if I am at a restaurant, I just put my napkin over that leg.

    Ankle carry

I think it would be the perfect location for office carry in an unfriendly environment. It is a very low probability that anyone would ever be involved in workplace violence, but it would comforting to know that one doesn't have to passively wait for the BG to shoot you. The only downside...
