One more quick note, I know that I may be ignorant in the legallities of all of this but I have been working on my own guns and those of friends and family since high school so I am not completely ignorant in the field. Don't know why I feel I need to share this, just makes me feel better I guess!
I really do appreciate all of the comments...from everyone! It is good to hear all opinions and benefit from all experiences! I am glad to hear that someone in my situation isn't completly without options, at the same time I understand that if my situation were diferent there mught be better...

types of coach guns
my coach gun is a Norinco, when I got it it took a little work to "tighten it up a bit" but after many, many rounds through it, I have all the faith in the world that it will protect my family if need be!

I use a 12 guage coach gun, nomoving action, manual hammers... simple, can't beat it! But I'd have to agree with most, if it were between the two you mention, pump!
I have been working on a High standard Supermatic 12 guage for a friend and i am at my wits end with this thing! To be honest I probably have less experience with semi-auto shotguns than any other type of firearm, but i thought I could figure it out. The gun will fire just fine if you load one...
