    Rate the .223 cartridge

300 yards, nope the .223 caliber bullets suffer very poor retained energy, they are marginal on deer up close I would not stretch one out past 150 for anything larger then a dog. At 300 yd get yourself a 270/30-06 bolt gun or a 308 if you want a semi auto.

    Mossberg 500 question.

I abused my Mossberg with magnum slugs/buckshot and it never showed a hint of failure, with normal game loads it should outlast your grandchildren.Very dependable gun, it cycles smoother then the 870s I use at work.

Reloader 15 what is it good for???

Was going to try RL15 in the 450 Marlin but could not find published load data so I went with the similar H335, it works wonders in a 450 Marlin, I am shooting 400gr Speers over 53gr and getting impressive accuracy considering the rifles 2x scope, first time out I shot a 1.25" group at 100, I...

    light 30.06 for whitetail

My dad tough me to shoot at age 5, I don't think 9 is too young so long as the child understands the importance of safety first, if you don't think they get that then wait until they are older, oh and a fully automatic Uzi is a stupid example, no reasonable person is going to put a weapon like...

Reloader 15 what is it good for???

I use RL15 in 308 and 22-250, very good powder for a wide range of aplications, now overall I like RL19 and RL22 more for my 6.5x55, 30-06 and magnums, but RL15 certainly has it's place. I would try it in my 7mm-08 as well but I am already shooting impressive speeds and well under MOA accuracy...

    light 30.06 for whitetail

The 06 can be loaded down to 30-30 levels and it would be a light kicker no doubt, just make sure to use a readily expanding bullet to match the lower impact speeds, some bullets do not function all that well at low impact speeds while others shine. The A-Max bullet has a reputation for good...

    30-06 feedback

I have experimented extensively with the 30-06 with 150gr and 165gr bullets. I have had my best accuracy with RL19 when using 150gr bullets and H414 has given me my best results with 165gr, while IMR4350 has worked reasonably well with both, and while I have yet to achieve tack driving accuracy...

Ruger M77 Tang Safety Sub-Moa Accuracy

I got my (near mint) MkII 7mm Rem Mag for $450 and it included a decent Bushnell Banner 4x12 scope. Bought it at a local pawn shop.

Ruger M77 Tang Safety Sub-Moa Accuracy

That is better then my MKII, I hover right around the 1.5" range with handloads and factory.

    choosing caliber for rossi m92?

The 357 is "Enough" for deer and small pigs, but the 454 will kill with alot more authority, and if you come across any larger pigs you won't be undergunned. I don't have the 454 yet but after shooting a 44 mag lever gun I want one. .45cal bullets leave one hellava blood trail, not that we have...

Thoughts on a new hunting rifle in 7mm08

Yeah the 7mm-08 and pretty much everything in the 308 family lends itself to compact lightweight rifles, not that CZ won't make you a good one. CZ lends itself to longer action slightly harder kicking cartridges like the 270 or 30-06 where the extra weight has a purpose. A CZ 270 win has been on...

    .223 deer bullets

The limiting factor in .223 performance on deer is penetration. So generally speaking the tougher TSX, TBBC, Fusion bullets are recommended since they are more likely to reach the vitals with adequate energy. That said the 65gr Sierra Game King is a legendary performer on deer despite it's old...

Thoughts on a new hunting rifle in 7mm08

My 7mm-08 is a Browning A-Bolt, and while I love it I would not list it as my first recommendation, simply because mine HATES all factory ammo, shoots ghastly 5" groups at 100 with every kind I have tried, but shoots cloverleafs with my H380 and Big Game handloads using Sierra Game King and Pro...

rifle & caliber for 300 to 600 yards

Like all wildly overbore cartridges it is not for the casual shooter, much like the 7mm Ultra Mag and 30-378, they burn barrels out too fast and are generally not alot of fun and very expensive to shoot though I am sure the 26 Nosler kicks less then the others I mentioned but still loud as hell...

rifle & caliber for 300 to 600 yards

The Savage 12 is likely to be more accurate then a Rem 700. The Savage is also more easily customizable. I have owned three 700s and six Savages, I have been more pleased with the Savages by a healthy margin, now if you were asking about Savage 12 vs Tikka Varminter that would be a much closer...

    FN made Model 70

I had a Featherweight in 308 and had the EXACT same problem, it appears that the chamber is cut a little rough if you looked closely you could see grooves on the brass, would cycle factory OK but if I approached max loads I would have to hammerfist the action open, though no excessive pressure...

Need help with Rem 700 accuracy

The first thing i would check is the scope, Centerpoint is low end glass to my eyes. If a good scope does not fix it I would attribute it to the rifle itself. A friend of mine had the same rifle and was unhappy with the accuracy he was getting even with a high end scope and match ammo, he sold...

    5.7x28?

I don't get it, a 22 mag or 223 is cheaper to feed and offer clear advantages, why mess with the 5.7 if not in a handgun?

    .30 carbine hunting

Ideally, a deer/hog hunting cartridge will have the energy/mass/momentum to expand to at leased 1/2" and traverse the vital organs. All that extra hydrostatic shock and stuff is nice if you are trying for a bang flop but as long as I can punch a nice sized hole through the heart/lungs he won't...

    Dpms 308 ar?

The challenge with short barrels is not their accuracy, in fact they have an advantage in barrel harmonics. The issues are muzzle blast, and the loss of speed, usually 20-40fps per inch of barrel length depending on cartridge and powder, if the 308 shoots 2820fps with a 150gr out of a 24" barrel...
