    What's next after 357 mag?

After my 6in 686, I bought another L frame S&W revolver, the 4.2" M69. I just used it for 44 Spl, due to old age hands, but you can load 44 Mag to what ever level you want. It's a handy woods gun with loads appropriate for the area. Available in 2.75" and 4.2 inch versions. It was an...

    66-5 Buy or not

Looks like the M66 in the original post has an earlier barrel; the dash 5 in post #43 has a pinned on front sight. 73, Rick

Splatter to my face when firing .45 colt

Accurate #5 is best for plus P loads like 38 Spl plus P. Around 20,000 PSI. There is no plus P load for 45 Colt. Max loads are around 15,000 PSI, so not a good powder for standard 45 Colt loads. Tier 2 pressure would likely be good for A#5, but I don't think the clones are up to that...

    S&W J frame .22LR

There have been 2" M63's made, but they are rare and have adjustable sights. https://www.ogca.com/Legendary%20Kit%20Gun.pdf 73, Rick

    Magnaport hurt value?

I think the effective barrel length of a ported revolver ends at the two holes. Might as well chop the barrel at that point. I had one ported gun and no more. It was a factory ported M686 with 6" barrel. Maybe dash 5? I think it was the 686P model. Not plus; it was a 6 shooter. 73, Rick

38 Special +P Carry Ammo: Where Did All Of It Go?

I bought a new S&W M10-14 Classic. I wanted to fire some of my defense ammo to check for function and placement. I had 10 rounds of the Federal 130 gr HST left. I fired a 4 shot group. It did well, and shot to point of aim, but I am down to one cylinder full for defense use. I wanted some...

    Gun Fighting Revolver

Kimber 3" DASA K6S. Best DA revolver I have used. Loaded with 6 rounds of Federal HST micro 130g plus pee. Carried in a Lobo Gun Leather Original Pancake holster. 73, Rick

    Pin Sights for J-Frame ?

If I were going to improve my 442, I would have a bead, either gold or white, installed in the front blade. The blade might have to be slightly re profiled to make room for the bead, as in post #4. But, first, I would try paint, white in my case. I don't think that not working out on a long...

460 S&W- Where can I shoot one in NW WA?

A lot of indoor ranges don't allow heavier than 44 MGN. Probably what the backstops are designed for. Besides, indoors, in a mainly concrete structure, a heavier gun would likely defeat the best hearing protection. I use double protection, and even so, 357 MGN is very loud. 73, Rick

460 S&W- Where can I shoot one in NW WA?

I have done similar types of outdoor activity in the Cascades and Olympics, and I make do with a steel Magnum J frame, like the 3 inch M60. Currently, I carry the Buffalo Bore 158 gr Outdoorsman Load, but the heavier 180 gr bear killers are possible. I would need to take pain pills afterward...

Lubricating a j frame without removing side plate

I think it's important to have the correct screwdrivers for your revolver, even if you don't remove the side plate. It's good to check for tightness of the screws from time to time. I once had a cylinder release fall off of my S&W revolver. I found the release thumb piece, but not the screw...

Best Snub .38 Ammo in Current Times

From post #19 "Anyway, I found that I really liked that load and over time I shot them up. Now I am trying to find a wadcutter load only with a little more speed along with accuracy that works well in my 442, 36 and model 10. It’s fun experimenting." Check out both Buffalo Bore 150 gr HC WC's...

The Worst holster I Ever Had.....

My two every day carries are a M442 and a M640Pro. Both are carried in Lobo Gunleather Original Pancake holsters. It is hard to imaging a better holster for concealed carry of these and similar revolvers. Both holsters are plain, unlined models. Price is reasonable for the quality. About...

An HD/SD Pistol for a Small Handed Woman...?

    HST 38 special

They are too expensive to shoot multiple cylinders full! I shoot a cylinder full when I go to the range, except that they are not available at this time. I have two cylinders full left, for my 442 and my 640 Pro. I carry different ammo for reloads, in any case. I figure that if the first five...

Standard Pressure .38 Spl Defensive Ammo

{I've always thought that too low a grain weight damages the gun unnecessarily (increased flame cutting of top strap)} Thats only for full power 357 Magnum loads. The only guns that I know of that specify no light ammo in 38 Special are the ones with Titanium cylinders. 110 gr ammo damages...

Standard Pressure .38 Spl Defensive Ammo

I tried a box of Hornady Critical Defense 110 grain standard pressure today. I thought it was "snappier" then the Federal 130 grain HST micro plus P that I have been carrying for a couple of years. The HST did well in the Lucky Gunner ammo tests, as did the Critical Defense. Hornady makes a...

    Model 10 in 357.

From post #23: "To swap in a longer cylinder, you would have to shorten the barrel extension and recut the forcing cone." This seems like a great way to get the barrel to cylinder gap that you really want. For not too much money either; good kitchen table gunsmith work! Doing this to your own...
