    Range Bag/Box Photo Thread!

BowerR64, Are those barrels plugged or something? Or what is the orange near each muzzle?

Some wintry fun with BP (et al.)

Thanks, it was fun. I think next time there needs to be more smoke! I just didn't think there was time for reloads, and I wanted some variety.

    Range Bag/Box Photo Thread!

Here it is, in all of its... erm... glory.

    Ammo, range, or both?

Very true, it isn't a direct comparison, although I didn't mean it to be one. I think I was asking why the performance was less than expected, and how it could have been done better. (Get closer, use different ammo, etc.) Of course this was just recreational, so the splat is really all I...

    Ammo, range, or both?

Modified choke, at something like 18 yards. Originally, the plan was to shoot from about 10 yards, but the camera operator has prior experience at wearing flying jello, and didn't fancy a repeat. If there had been more time, there was also a Full choke that could have been used.

    Ammo, range, or both?

Any thoughts on why the performance was a little underwhelming here? At about half the distance, these were much better on water jugs. As it happened, the 12 gauge got outshone by two rifles, and one of those was a blackpowder muzzleloader. Came close to using some 2-3/4" rifled slugs, but...

Some wintry fun with BP (et al.)

Thought I would share. The frontstuffer was the surprise champ this time out, performing much better than expected. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpqcUUdbHMc The .50 is a caplock, and as mentioned in the video, paired with a cloth patched .480" swaged lead roundball, and tamped down on...

    PAPERLESS .44 cal revolver cartridges

If'n I were ye, I would skip the wad, unless the pellet is too short for your rammer to fully seat the ball on top of it. A wad would be preferable to an air gap, if that is the case. I don't personally find wads, over-ball lube, or any projectile lube to be necessary or even particularly...

    1851 Navy: .44 as good as .36?

 I think we have a winner. Or get an 1851 in .36, an 1851 in .44, and 1860 in .44... And a Walker, and a few Dragoons...

    Paper Cartridges

The best way to answer that question is to try it... You've already got the materials, and you are already rolling your own. You could try it and see. You might also ask if you really need the lube to begin with...

    Paper Cartridges

I experimented with several brands, and I think I've finally settled on Buglers. I can't say that I've had an issue of a misfire or a hangfire with cigarette paper cartridges since I switched. (Although to be fair, I don't roll cartridges for most of my shooting, so I haven't shot through...

Need info for my 1860 Army.

As someone who doesn't use wads or lube, can I ask why you are using 2 ox-yoke wads?

    Testing loose fitting balls

While I have a few different brands of holy black on hand, I do not currently have any Pyrodex, and don't currently plan to acquire any. (I don't have a reason to believe it would behave differently in this case, unless you all can enlighten me.) I do have some 777 left, but I don't think there...

    Testing loose fitting balls

Yes, but not at length, only a set of quick "proof of concept" exercises. I haven't had the opportunity to do any more actual work since the 16th of June though.

Shooting Remington New Model Army .44s with round balls and conicals

Bummer about the cap jams. (Although you've made me feel like I've been lied to... I thought I was told that Remingtons were impervious to cap jams.) Otherwise, as is pretty typical, nice video Mike.

    Testing loose fitting balls

Excellent point. Probably outside the current scope, but it might be something to try to evaluate at some point. As much as is humanly possible. ;) Doing so would not completely answer my questions, but thank you for the suggestion. Thank you for mentioning this. I hope to get more...

    Thank goodness!

Man's gun, woman's gun... I guess I just never was worried enough about it to look up my revolver's skirt. ;)

Ok, its starting to smell good.

Verify this for yourself with plenty of testing (you were wanting to shoot often to practice, right???), but I would recommend that you clean and oil normally, and when you are done, wipe away the excess oil from the cylinders, and do the same to the nipples with a pipe cleaner. You should find...
