    Learn something everyday...3rd Model Dragoon

I had a nice Uberti 1 Model dragoon. Traded it to David Carrico of Carrico leather for some period correct holsters and gunbelt and some other stuff. He makes a lot of stuff for the movies and provides cavalry actors. He in turn rented it to the makers of the 2010 True Grit movie. I thought it...

Do you shoot revolvers with cartridges packed in real black powder

Driftwood Johnson, I stand corrected.

    AAFES reverses decision on magazines

I was raised an Army brat and I have lived close to Ft. Knox most of my life. Up until recently it was the Armour Center until the last prez moved it (Patton is rolling over in his grave). I have always thought it was stupid when they restricted the types of guns the PX carried, and restricted...

    9mm Shield

I carry the Shield 95% of the time. I have found it extremely easy to conceal and very reliable. It's my go to gun even thought I have others. I just bought my wife the Shield 380 EZ today. Her arthritis is making it harder for her to pull the trigger on her Taurus 85UL. It's pretty close to the...

Learn about guns before you try to educate me on guns

During a town festival show i had a 20 something wanting to showing off his "disarming skills" to his equally immature friends. I was in period dress and carrying dual Remingtons butt forward in slim jim holsters. We had just "robbed" the bank and were walking back to our "safety" area to get...

Movies that show the actor reloading his cap-n-ball revolver?

We use blanks for cartridge firearms, but cap and ball revolvers are BP topped with cream of wheat and a drop of oil to swell the cream of wheat and can be carried all day. We are insured and pass all safety tests. We finished a movie called Cold Justice (Straight to DVD) where we used mostly...

Movies that show the actor reloading his cap-n-ball revolver?

I'm pretty sure the movie "Ride with the Devil" with Tobey Maguire and Skeet Ulrich has some reloading in it. If you want to see lots of old cap and ball revolvers and rifles in use, watch it. I have a few friends that were in it and they had to provide their own historically correct firearms...

What about the 1860army 44 snubby with WHITE FINISH

Many old revolvers were Nickel plated for reasons more than bling or looks. The old timers said they helped the gun clean easier and provided some protection from the corrosion of black powder when it may be a while before it could be cleaned after firing.

Do you shoot revolvers with cartridges packed in real black powder

I reload BP in .45 Colt and Schofield. For historical accuracy for the Calvary, they used .45 Schofield in the Colt SAA. The original .45 Colt was loaded with 40 grains in a balloon head case, but was found to be heavy on recoil for the troops. They went with .35 grains afterwards in the Colt...

Question for LEOs and retired LEOs

Early in my career, a lot were cheap .22 or .25 revolvers and semiautos. They misfired a lot or jammed, which was good for us. In my later years, after legal CCW became more normal, i saw better guns like glocks, smiths and so forth that were in good shape. But most were stolen.

What was your very first percussion blackpowder revolver?

When I lost about everything many moons ago, I bought a CVA .44 "Reb" navy. Had a brass frame, octagonal barrel and no safety pins between the nipples. But it was new and it was cheap. Although I had my duty weapon, I wanted something for treks in the woods and fishing, but was quite broke and...

Beautiful Colt and a great father for passing it down.

    65 Shots in 15 seconds

Really hard to criticise unless you've been through it. I have, 8/14/87. Paper don't shoot back. One falling doesn't help perception, as they may of thought he was down. Most were standing out from cover, if they are exmilitary, that could be military cover fire training kicking in. Either way...

Loose Rounds, First Generation (1988) Federal Hydra-Shok .45 ACP 230gr in Clear Gel

I would have liked to see some of the old CCI .45 flying ashtrays from the late 1980's in ballistic gel. We carried them in our S&W 645's when we transitioned from revolvers. We actually were issued the aluminium cased hollow points at the time.

    Is your rifle 400yd ready?

Where I live, there aren't anywhere near straight line 400 yards of open ground to shoot. Yes, I have fields that get planted, but these are around or through occasional patches of woods or brush. A little hilly here also, so the hills kind of block some of the views out very far.

Something Else To Think About When Choosing Your Self Defense Ammunition

When I was in the academy, many moons ago, we trained at night by flashing a flashlight on, then off and shoot where the target was, with handgun and shotgun. We actually were issued the Remington ammo on our department. I don't remember the flashes bothering me as much as noticing they lit up...

Fallacy: The AR15 isn't good for hunting, competition, or self-defense, or children -

My brother-in-law who knows nothing about firearms told me yesterday that he doesn't think "assault rifles" should be legal, and brought up these same arguments. I said well, your Bro-in-law (me) owns three. Then I asked him if he remembered his deceased father's guns the family gave me because...

The one you just can't get rid of...

Yep, a Rossi 92 carbine in .45 colt. I bought it in 1996 to use as a saddle and truck gun. Thing fits me better than any rifle I own and I can point shoot that thing amazingly well. For some reason I sold it to a fellow at work in 2000 and hated myself for doing it. I looked at some others at...

    Lots of AR threads lately.

My 16 year old nephew has joined with some others to start a group in school to debate the anti's. He has been coming to the farm since he was a little squirt and his mom let me teach him how to hunt, fish and handle firearms. He loves shooting the rifles and shotguns, and is a natural, shoots...
