Hornady bullet comparator with .303 British

It seems that Hornady doesn't make a .311" bushing for the bullet comparator, only .30". I am guessing that if you placed a .311" bullet manufactured for a rifle such as the SMLE or Mosin-Nagant into the .30" comparator bushing, you would not have the ogive stop against the bushing. Therefore...

Hornady OAL gauge and bullet comparator initial results

Probably won't get out to shoot again until next weekend. I'll post my targets on the forum then. Thanks for the advice.

Hornady OAL gauge and bullet comparator initial results

Like I said, I should be subtracting one inch off those lengths. The lengths I listed include the bullet comparator and it's bushing. The actual average length should be 2.274"

Hornady OAL gauge and bullet comparator initial results

I tried the Hornady OAL gauge and bullet comparator this evening for the first time with my Savage 10 LE .308 rifle and a Sierra 175 gr SMK bullet. Here's 10 independent measurements from the case head to the ogive: 3.279" 3.273" 3.268" 3.275" 3.275" 3.273" 3.272" 3.273" 3.274" 3.275" 3.274"...

max Varget load for .311" Hornady FMJ BT 174 gr

Is there enough similarity between the SMK 174 gr HPBT and the Hornady 174 gr FMJ BT that you can use loading data interchangeably between the two bullets?

max Varget load for .311" Hornady FMJ BT 174 gr

The published Varget powder max load for the Hornady .311" FMJ BT 174 gr bullet is 39.1 gr. At 39.0 gr, I am only getting 2234 fps. But I want to drive this bullet at 2440 fps to replicate the military load. The max published load for the SMK 174 gr HPBT bullet is 42.0 gr. Can I safely...

    hammer doesn't align with nipple

I just put a Green Mountain replacement barrel on my TC Hawken. The hammer aligns imperfectly with the nipple supplied with the barrel, and fails to properly align with the shorter nipple that came with the original barrel. Looks like the positioning of the nipple on the breach is slightly...

    COAL not consistent - why?

OK, guys. You've convinced me. I ordered a Hornady OAL gauge and bullet comparator today. I'm still going through the process of finding the best powder charge. (Firing rounds loaded at 0.5 gr increments with Varget from 42 gr to 45 gr behind a 175 gr HPBT, I got my best groups around 42.5...

    COAL not consistent - why?

Guys, Thanks for all of those comments. I'm handloading for a Savage Model 10LE .308 (i.e. bull-barrel). Going to go out tomorrow and put a few rounds through it with different charges of Varget behind a SMK 175 gr HPBT. I guess the question I have now is whether this rifle can be made...

    COAL not consistent - why?

So are you saying that my Sierra Matchking projectiles aren't consistent length? I don't understand why people even bother to record COAL if you can't load to a consistent length...

    COAL not consistent - why?

I don't understand what is going on: I've full-length sized and trimmed my cases, and set the seating die on my press. When I mic the loaded cases, the COAL varies by a few 1000th's of an inch. How can that be? I thought that the seating die was supposed to give you a consistent COAL.

RCBS Trim Pro not holding cartridge tight

Yep, that's what the problem was... Tightened up those pins and it is working properly again. Might be worthwhile for RCBS to say something about that in the instructions... Thanks for your help. Dave.

RCBS Trim Pro not holding cartridge tight

I think my RCBS Trim Pro is broken. I was trimming some cases this evening and shell plate stopped holding the cases tight against the TP Compression Pin face, so when I turned the handle with the cutter contacting the case mouth, the case would rotate freely. Obviously this means that the...
