    Shooting into water barrel

water barrel bullet trap I thought I posted a reply yesterday, but I guess I put it in the wrong thread or something. I used a water barrel trap for ballistic testing. We had a standard 55 gallon drum filled to the top with water. We had a circle of 1" steel dropped in the bottom just for...

    .177 plastic BBs

I saw 4.5mm/.177 plastic BBs years ago, but they have disappeared. Pretty sure you can get them in Europe and Japan.

Why are self-powered reflex sights so expensive?

The tritium cost issue is not a significant factor. Tritium emergency exit signs cost a tad under $200 and contain as much tritium as at least twenty weapons sights (about 3 feet of it).

Interesting experience at Gun shop outside of Chicago...

My LGS is great about transfers. I have asked a few times if they'd order a gun in, but whenever I'd say who had it at what price, he would suggest I order it myself, and it always comes out cheaper. I get a phone call when my gun comes in, and the paperwork is always waiting when I arrive.

OK, Tell the Truth! Do You Carry a .32 Revolver for CCW ?

For a while I carried a Basque made French Ruby .32 Mine was a nicely made gun, I massaged and tuned the action, gave it a stronger mainspring, and it handled the 75 grain Buffalo Bore hard cast flat nose nicely, averaging about 1,000 fps out of it's 4" barrel. Magazine capacity was 9 rounds...

FMJ for defense in small calibers?

.380 is 9x17mm, headspaces on the mouth, and is .984 in overall length. Max pressure is 21,500. 9mm is 9x19 (also headspacing on the mouth) and is 1.169 overall. Max pressure is 35,000 the Federal 9BPLE is +p+ ...I believe is running pressure somewhere north of 44,000 So I see three...

    Deadliest cartridge in history

Let's see... 8mm mauser had a good run, 2 world wars. I've read of the belt fed water cooled machine guns firing tens of thousands of rounds continuously. 7.62x54r has been in constant use for 124 years. It's bound to have racked up a high kill count. 7.62x39 has behind the AK behind...

Big drug bust locally, replete with obligatory photo of "gun table."

The AR looking rifle is a Chiappa M4-22, AKA Armscor M16 22, AKA M1600. A cheesey .22 dressed up up look exactly like an M16... if you've never seen an M16 before.

    Shotguns still good enoughfor me

I don't imagine civilian situations occur very often where much reloading is needed. I agree that most pump shotguns are a little limited (my 1300 holds 8), but I can't recall hearing of a situation that required more. As to needing to perform a rapid reload of an M4, what civilian situation...

FMJ for defense in small calibers?

.32 ACP, .380 ACP, 9x18 (To a much lesser extent .25 auto) These cartridges have been used by police and for self defense over many decades in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, actually... pretty much everywhere but the USA. In their FMj loadings, out of small to mid sized pistols...

Is 380 Just A Marginal Round?

The basic question "is 380 a marginal caliber?" is actually easily answered, and the answer is "No." For around 6 decades .380 and .32 were the leading police round in Europe, and also saw extensive use in many other regions. Important to note is that FMJ was exclusively used. Some European...

    Shotguns still good enoughfor me

blurring the lines The modern assault shotgun has seriously blurred the lines as far as what a shotgun can do. I am a big fan of the Saiga 12 and find it the pinnacle of versatility. The inexpensive QD scope mounts means I can swap optics in a heartbeat. I've picked up a couple stocks and...
