    new loader-test loads?

To the OP, I also am very new to reloading and wasted much time using data in my Hornady 9th edition trying to find a 55 grain vmax load as you are. I was using the data and got nowhere near the published velocities (about 500fps slower at one point) and even when using the hornady "maximum"...

    Accurate powder for 50-55gn .223

Well I tested some loads with 27.5 grains of varget with both a 50 and 55 grain bullet on top. The velocities were better but not great. The 50's avg. was 2890fps and 2830fps for the 55's. Accuracy was good at .275" on the low and .827" from center to center of the furthest shots. In my quest...

    .223 FL resizing issue

Thanks for the replies and sorry for not being more clear with the "tight chamber" thing. However, I chronographed my loads and found out they were way under powered (not dangerous, just on the very low side). I believe the underpowered loads are not producing enough pressure to expand the...

    Electronic Scale Recommendation

Another vote for the hornady bench scale, but if you can find a scale accurate to 0.01gn, I would try to go that route

    .223 FL resizing issue

Thanks Jeff, these were my own cases that I shot. As far as set up, I don't have the instructions with me right now but I do remember reading that the shell holder under no circumstance should come in contact with the die or the treads could be damaged. I'm my case, even when the dies is...

    .223 FL resizing issue

OK thanks guys, I figured it wasn't too important but wanted to make sure. I ended up just expanding and sizing the necks only and leaving the shoulders where they were. Thanks for helping me clear this up.

    First one-hole group!

Very nice indeed! I too have just begun reloading and am still searching for that perfect combination you have just found. It's exciting to see one ragged hole at that distance.

    .223 FL resizing issue

Hi all, I am new to reloading and while trying to set the shoulder back 0.003 from the fire formed headspace, I realized that I was not actually setting it back at all and ran out of space from the top of the shell holder and bottom of die before I made any change. I am using a redding type s...

    Accurate powder for 50-55gn .223

Thanks for the reply another_Kelley and ironicaintit! I do think I will try IMR4198 if I cannot produce good groups with a higher charge of varget. I'm not super velocity hungry, but with that said, I would love to see those 50gn noslers move at 3400fps. I will test the higher charge varget...

    Accurate powder for 50-55gn .223

Thanks to everyone for the great replies and helping me sort this out, I am going to increase the charge weight and report back once I complete the testing in a week or so, stay tuned...

Coloradoshooter77, this is exactly what I hoped to hear, I will continue the ladder test to 27.5gn and report back in a week thank you!

Primary arms 4-14x44 ffp scope with R-grid reticle

Old thread, but I thought I should update. I went ahead and bought the scope.before mounting, I let it sit in the freezer for 2½ hours then straight into the sink full of room-temp water where it stayed for 3 mins. As expected, everything checked out. I mounted it to my RRA 16" which...

    Accurate powder for 50-55gn .223

Thanks for all the great replies! I just got back from shooting and was testing nosler 50gn ballistic tip varmint sitting on top of 25.5 gn of varget with a Remington primer and lapua case. The nosler website tells me that this charge should produce around 3150fps minus a little for my 16"...

    Accurate powder for 50-55gn .223

Wildfire, why change powders between the two rifles? Are you using heavier bullets in your AR or does that powder just print better in that gun? Thanks for all the great replies!

    Accurate powder for 50-55gn .223

Hi all, I am currently at a crossroads between using the powder (varget) I currently have which works okay and buying a better powder for these lighter 50-55gn varmint bullets I am using. Any suggestions on the best powder for the best accuracy using lighter weight .223 bullets would be...

    Reloading accuracy-bullet seating depth

I agree with murf, load up some from scratch to compare, we all know what they say about consistency... For what it's worth, I'm struggling with the same thing the OP has described and am getting ready to test the difference between max magazine length and 0.01 shorter seating depth. Will post...

    tumbled primed cases?

Please excuse my ignorance, I'm new to reloading, but what is the value of tumbling primed brass? Why not tumble before prime?

New to reloading .223 Questions?? Help??

I've been successful using varget with a 50gn nosler ballistic tip varmint bullet, lapua case, and Remington 7½ primer. Usually prints around .40" out of my AR as long as I do my part.

Single stage, turret or lock-n-load? Forster press with Dillon trimmer?

I went with the rcbs over the lock n' load because its cast iron and not cast alloy. However, I do realize that I would likely never load enough to expose any durability problems in the hornady press. I have been looking at the new iron press hornady came out with a couple months ago.
