I too have an old Mossberg. It shoots the CCI mag 40 gr hp. consistently 3/4" at 100 yds. (3 shot groups) I have tried other ammo without the results so I stocked up on the CCI of that same lot. The only drawback is the long barrel and weight. also, I had to use offset rings to get the scope...
Ks5shooter, be sure to load light loads. They put carbon in steel to harden and strengthen it. The shotshells from that era were low pressure. I would find some low pressure loads in the 7 to 8k range using euro hulls and federal or gulliani wads
Back in the day--- before police depts. issued sidearms, I carried one on duty for 20 years. Mine was stainless. My oldest daughter got it when I retired. I since bought one that is blued, for old time sake. FWIW. I always qualified at the police range as expert. Never had a moments trouble
Most benchresters (6ppc) use 220 Russian Lapua brass and neck up to 6mm and then neck turn to whatever there chamber is. I have 2 with .262 necks and one 268
Walkalong, It sure looks like you were not watching the wind flags, or there was a sudden shift in wind. I'm an old 4 and 1 myself. Those were 100 yd. targets, think how it would have ben at 200. BTW that .186 was a real good target. I would be happy with that in my rail. Too bad that you Didn't...
Riomouse, my 878 was a replacement for the 58. It also had a bulge in the barrel. I bought it for a song knowing that an 870 barrel would fit. I had to drill the gas ports but that was no problem. I also put a nylon bumber behind the bolt so that I could shoot modern loads. If you can find...
I don't know what happened to the old police riot shotguns. I assume they are still in use. They were not fired much. We had to qualify at the range every 6 months. There was a lot of loading and unloading and rough handling but not much fireing. I have not seen any for sale.
Sinclair sells a device that you can measure your chambers case length. You have to modify a case to use it. Col. Billy Stevens put me on to that at a benchrest match. I now have them for other calibers. I like to keep my cases .005 shorter than my chamber length
I remember those old riot guns. I retired from the Tuscaloosa PD in 1992. Only fired it at the range. When I arrived on the scene, all I had to do was rack the slide and put a round in the chamber and everything settled down. The sound of racking the slide had quite an effect.
I have two early 60"s. One is an 11-48. Its a recoil operated without the hump. I have 4 barrels for this gun. Two with cuts compensators and one trap barrel. the other is a mod 878 gas operated. It was susposed to be an improvement over the sportsman 48 and 58. I have modified some 870 barrels...
I have a Rem 11-48 recoil operated that I bought with a bulged barrel. I found a barrel with a cuts on it for a hefty price. I' glad I bought it now. I have since added all the chokes and another barrel with a vent rib also with a cuts and also an original trap barrel. I have a pattern board and...
Hi, new to the forum. Like walkalong said, not enough overhang to worry about. BTW. Walkalong, I too shot NBRSA at the Fayette range. Was once a member of that range. Don't live too far away
