Ruger 10/22 bolt hold open on last shot

I had always wanted a Ruger 10/22 Carbine with the wood stock and blued barrel. Wal Mart used to carry them for about $190 and I almost bought one from them one day. They stopped carrying guns at all the stores near me about two weeks later (this was two or three years ago) and I have kicked...

How did the 168 grain .308 come about?

I buy mostly 150 grain bullets of various styles and manufacturers to load for .30-06. I see a lot of different 150 grain, 165 grain, and 180 grain .308 bullets on the market. Most of the 168 grain bullets are designated as match. How did the weight of 168 grains come about such that they are...

    RCBS Precision Mic Gauge

I picked up a RCBS Precision Mic Gauge. I fully understand the headspace "half" of the tool, but I do not fully understand the seating depth "half" of the tool. According to the instructions, you (1) set the freebore tool to a specified length (done). Then you (2) chamber the freebore tool...

    Taper crimp

Will the Lee Factory Crimp Die produce a taper crimp, or is a taper crimp something different? I am loading up some Hornady 150 gr. FMJ-BT's for my M1 Garand. That bullet has a cannelure, and will accept the roll crimp from my RCBS seater die. I might also be interested in loading some...

    Difference between A-Max and V-Max

I love Hornady bullets, and I keep seeing A-Max and V-Max for sale, but I cannot tell the difference between the two. Is one better suited for one application over the other?

Do you write in your load manuals?

I have been brought up to never write in books. My mother was a librarian and it was a mortal sin in school to write in books. Do you all write in your load books and make notes or highlight favorite charges?

    What exactly is the ogive?

I see a lot of references to the ogive of a bullet. I have searched and found poor definitions as to what it is. The best I can tell it is some point on the bullet that is not the tip, and it is not the full diameter of the bullet. What exactly is the ogive, and where is it on the bullet...

Just got my Redding Competition Seater die

I just got my Redding Competition Seater die this morning. The instructions specifically encourage you to take it apart. This construction on this thing is amazing! It is a little dirty and needs some cleaning, but it is amazing! The seater sleeve is huge, and it has its own "recoil spring." :D

Using competition dies all the time

I ordered a Redding Competition Seater die for .30-06 loads. I have other seating dies for .30-06 (RCBS and Lee). Would there be any downside to using my Redding Competition die for all my seating, such as wearing the die out for loading plinking ammo, or anything along those lines? My...

    What is run out?

I was watching this Ammosmith video, and he keeps referring to "run out" with his dies. What does that mean? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc1lDG9E_UI

    Dies and shell holders

I have a RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme press. I own several sets of RCBS dies, and one set of Lee dies. I am going to purchase the Redding competition seating die for .30-06. Can I use my RCBS shell holder with that die, or would I need to purchase the Redding shell holder for that die? My RCBS...

Ammunition shortage almost delays new police department

I live just a few miles from Dunwoody, GA. They are newly incorporated and their new police department almost didn't start patrolling on time due to the ammo shortage. Here is the article: http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/dekalb/stories/2009/03/30/dunwoody_police_force.html

Factory ammo with Hornady 55 gr FMJ-BT .224

I just purchased 1,100 Hornady 55 gr FMJ-BT .224 bullets from Midway to load into .223 Rem. I will be shooting it out of a Ruger Mini 14, so I am not really concerned with it being really accurate, as the rifle will only do about 3-4 MOA anyway. I am looking to load it in Remington brass with...

    Reduced load for .30-06

I have always wanted to try some reduced loads in .30-06 from my Speer Manual. Page 480 of #14 gives load data for AA 5744 for 150 grain bullets. I have a bunch of Remingtom Core-Lokt PSP's in 150 grains that I would like to try this with. Speer gives a start load of 26.0 grains of the AA...

Using a dresser as a reloading bench

I have an old dresser in my office that I am considering using as a reloading bench. It is almost eight feet long with plenty of storage space inside it for my reloading gear. I would also make use of the length for cleaning rifles. I am using an RCBS Rock Chucker, and I am purchasing the...

    My SD Shooting

I get asked a lot about my signature line. Here it goes. I have always been a dog fan. My parents had a little dog when I was a kid, but she was mean, nasty, and did not want anything to do with me. My grandparents had a big dog that I loved a lot, and I spent a lot of time with her. My...

    Trickler operation

I currently measure charges using my Lee dippers onto my digital scale. I then use the same dipper as a trickler, throwing a kernel or two of powder to get to 0.1 grains. I want to buy a trickler, but I am a little confused as to the operation of it. It appears from reading reviews that some...

Loading bullets without specific load manuals

I bought some 150 gr .308 Remington Core-Lokt bullets from Cabelas to load in .30-06 for punching holes in paper. I searched Remington's website and I can't find any load data for them. So far in my short reloading career, I have purchased the loading manual published by the manufacturer of...

    RCBS Rangemaster 750 scale

I bought a RCBS Rangemaster 750 scale from Midway. I got the package, opened it up, and immediately turned it on. I tried to calibrate it, but when I would remove the check weights, it would come to -0.9 grains. I kept trying to calibrate it, and it eventually worked its way up to -0.4 grains...
