I remember reading somewhere that NYPD ESU put 145,000 rounds through some of their ACC556 versions of the Mini over the years. Now they have M4s.
Realistically the Mini will do fine for most people buying it. If you want a combat weapon to mount optics one yous are probably better off...
I had a P7 from 1980 and it was nice. It did get a little hot when at the range and the heel release was a little weird but it worked.
I loved it enough that I sold it to fund buying a P7M8. Then when I went to a gun store on whim and found a screaming deal on a P225 with k-kote and night...
First off when you say 1911 what are you talking about?
One made in 1911? One made in 1944? One made in 1975? One in 1988? Now?
How about manufacturers?
Kimber? Colt? Springfield? RRA? RIA? Armscor? Ithica? Remington? Remington-Rand? Singer? AMT? Valtro? STI? Wilson...
MY guess on the 5.56 vs. .40 ARs is that the are meant for the the "average agent." Something with less spread and recoil than a shotgun but still easier to shoot out to 100ish yards. The "average agent" is probably not likely to pull their pistol much let alone an rifle out. Now SWAT and HRT...
CA Fish and Game has them. Or did the last time I saw one. They are pretty rare to find. Fish and Game guys that is. There are probably less than 100 for 38 million people in CA. The state has been pondering making CHP take them over, partly just to be able to say they are the "Department...
The one thing missing from the new manufactured coach guns is the lack of ejectors, that should speed up the reloading proces a bit. Unless someone has snuck one in when I wasn't looking.
My PD used to issue MP5/10mm before AR-15s became the coolest thing to have in the rack of a patrol car. Quite a few agencies in the SF Bay Area issued them in all three calibers and all kinds of configurations. We have ARs now but I still miss the MP5. It was more compact than our 16" rifles...
It's easy to hammer out something that resembles a Mini-14 mag. Or any other mag for that reason. It is hard to get it right. I think some companies just hammer out crap for cheap and there are more than enough suckers to buy them.
What I am getting at is that unless your centerfire rifles only consist an AR-15 mag fed weapon you will have to buy magazines other than AR-15 magazines.
That means no AK, FAL, M1A, etc. Otherwise you run into the problem of having non AR-15 pattern mags.
Now if all you ever run is...
I went to a multi day patrol rifle instructor school a year ago. Many kinds of ARs with all kinds of variations on gear, make, model, etc. One person ran an SU-16 and another ran a Mini-14. All finished the class with no problems. The Ruger shooter was running about average for the class...
I think you would be reasonably well armed for most situations. Maybe not ideally armed for all situations but good enough for most.
A stripper clip guide would help out the Savage. I was lookig into a Savage Scout once and asked their custom shop if they could put one in and they said they...
Between the 580 Mini I bought and my department's ARs there really is no difference in accuracy.
The barrel heats up faster but the ARs we have are heavier barrelled. If we had older style Colts with thinner barrells it would prbably be the same. Same thing for the weight. My mini is...
My PD issued them before my time. They were such pieces of crap they pretty much fell apart within a couple of years. I heard the last year or so they were used people would check them out for the shift and pocket the mag since the PD mandated Smith autos at the time. They went back to...
I went with this for a shotgun war bag.

I figure the two pockets let me carry buck and slugs seprately. IIRC it will hold 50 2.75" shells in each pocket. It has been a while since I have filled it up to capacity.
I remember seeing an SFPD training film from the 40's or so in my academy (San Mateo just south of SF) where they were shooting at those same targets. The narrator said shooting in the stomach was to take suspects alive. They also showed some baton moves that would get you fired now.
