    New .243

I shoot a sporter weight savage and it likes sierra gk's. 100 gr is what I use. 107's might be worth a try.

Carrying in woods without a permit? (TN)

Not familier with TN. Is small game hunting permitted in area you will be in? Do you have a hunting license? Just a thought, not encouraging illegal carry.

    Global Gun Grab

I just finished reading Global Gun Grab by william Norman Grigg. It was written in '01, so some things have chanced. He brings up some interesting points about the UN's quest for global disarmament. I was the must flustered by his insight on how America's police department's are transitioning...

Thinking of either Keltec or Hipoint carbines... help

I have a hi-point and like it. It's ugly and there aren't a lot of accessories to go with it. But how can you complain about $150 carbine with a lifetime warranty that goes bang everytime you pull the trigger. And it is quite accurate.

Own any guns that have "a history"?

Not a world changing story, but special to me. When I was about 12, my dad and I were at my grandparents one Sunday afternoon when one of our big white sheep dogs who had not been raised around sheep or goats, starting mauling a goat that was stuck the the fence. My dad got the dog out the...

    Building a Remington 700?

I am in the process of converting a savage 30-06 that I picked up for about$250 into a 35 whelen. I ordered a A&B barrel from midway for $129 and a Boyd's JRS peppered laminate stock. The stock won't be ready until Sept or Oct. I'll have about $500 in this project with my recoil pad, bedding...

    Replacing bbl for Savage .243

If your dead set on a barrel swap, go for it. But don't think that 22" tube won't be accurate. I've hit prairie dogs at 325 with my factory 22" pencil thin barrel. 2" more barrel will probably increase your velocity 50-80 fps maybe. .243 is already a pretty effiecient round. You may not see...

    bullet designs

No real advantage to boattails until about 300 yds. I like sierra gamekings over the prohunters though. The boattails seem to load easier with less run out. Ballistic come in two catogories--varmint and big game. For example in 6mm, Hornady makes a 87 gr v-max and 95 gr sst. They can be...

    mauser scope base

I traded for a 25-308 wildcat on a mauser action today and was wandering if you could advise me on what scope bases I would need. There are a lot of choices on bases (98, 96, FN, etc). The action looks to be the Turkish large ring small shank. It is marked TC, ASFA, ANKARA, K KALE, 1940, SN...

    First Rifle

Price of the 7.62 x 39 is about the same as .223. Saiga is the manufacturer and the model and can be had in .223 or 7.62 x 39. You might consider getting a sks. They can be had for around $150-175 and shoot 7.62 x 39. reliable, rugged and fun and cheap to plink with. Also a decent hog or...

    First Rifle

223 can be found for $5-7 for a box of 20, while 243 and 270 will run you $12-20 a box. 223 is probably the most popular centerfire round especially for plinking. ammo is cheap and plentiful. recoil is light. and nearly every manufacturer makes rifles in 223. NEF singleshots starting around...

    Getting started in bowfishing...

I use a AMS retriever #310 on a Browning Cobra Recurve. Works great. I tried using a reel and didn't like the line whip. The retrievers work great with the plastic arrow slide and cost $65-90 depending on where you get it. Be careful, Bowfishing is addicting.

    "Best" Deer Hunting State

I like Oklahoma. I've never hunted anywhere else, but I am perfectly happy here. In the SE part of the state there are mountains and timber. Treestands work well and there are lot of deer, but they are small bodies. In the SW, the population is growing and hunting the rivers, canyons and...

    I love Oklahoma!

Werewolf, I agree that many Oklahomans own guns, but are not actively pro-gun or pro-2a. My Dad, for example, has 7 or 8 guns, but rarely practices and only hunts 2 or 3 times a year. He loves fishing and only hunts when the fish aren't biting. He loves taking kids and newbies fishing.

    I love Oklahoma!

I am in a suburban community about 15-20 min east of OKC. Still a lot of rural and agricultural ties, but the majority of our families work in the city. Tinker is a major employer of our community. We are a 5a school and average about 150-160 per grade.
