Help with an SA M1 Garand

One thing that makes this rifle a bit more valuable to a collector is the fact that it was manufactured during the actual years of the Korean war. ( 25 June 1950 - 27 July 1953) . Springfield Armory had ceased production of the M1 Garand in 1945 in the serial number range of 388xxxx or 39xxxxx...

Buying CMP M1 Garand - ownership details and choices

As Gator and others have said only walnut was used to produce new M1 stocks during WW2. It was not until Feb. 1943 that the armory's supply of WW1 stock blanks was exhausted. Contracts were placed with 16 suppliers for walnut blanks. By March 1943 the Armory had contracted for one and one-half...

Buying CMP M1 Garand - ownership details and choices

The useful life of an M1 barrel is approximately 6000 rounds. Experience has shown that after 6000 rounds a reasonable marksman will detect poorer scores on his/her target and will want to re-barrel the rifle. The "cone of dispersion" opens up noticeably beyond 6000 rounds due to muzzle wear...

    The CMP Correct Grade Garand

Akulahawk - That's a real nice Garand. Rifles in that serial range would normally have barrels dated Apr & May 1956. It is believed those rifles were assembled between mid summer 56 and early spring 1957. Your barrel, dated 10 of 54, is interesting in that the 1954 barrel is a common trait of...

Buying CMP M1 Garand - ownership details and choices

You say you are not a collector so, for a shooter, I would go with the "Service Grade", you will get a better barrel than with rack or field grade. WW2 guns still available, but only in rack or field grades. Add a "sticky" note to order form requesting WW2. CMP will do there best.

    94 Winchester question

You can't put a $ figure on a gun that has been in your family and handed down to you as the next caretaker. I think if you were to sell that gun you would regret it long after the money was gone. Keep it, enjoy and take care of it and then hand it on down to your children or another family...

    $600 to spend

Garand for sure. Service Grade is fine if all you want a shooter. If you think you are going to want to restore the "standard Grade" sometime in the future, I think you will find it will most likely cost you alot more than the $ 350.00 extra you will pay for the Correct Grade. Like most...

    $600 to spend

Quote [ MakAttak Senior Member I'm trying to make a similar decision, however mine is: $600 on the service grade or $950 on the correct grade. Is it really worth $350 more for an upgrade from good/very good to very good/excellent? ] Quote From what I have been hearing the...

    M1 Garand Finish

A number of years ago I refinished a gas Cylinder using a flat black paint I got in a hobby shop. It was made for refinishing model electric train engines. I had read someplace that after painting, the clylinders were baked in an oven. I no longer recall the details, such as how long and at what...

    Best Riot Rifle

You asked "best riot rifle" but as others have said, up close and personal, you can't beat a 12 Ga. shotgun. I like a pump because just racking a 12Ga. is usally enough to quiet down most. And if not, well, not much more to the story.

must have rifles in a collecction

I see alot of folks want an M1 Garand, well at least, other than money, that is not a hard order to fill as there are alot around. I have the M1s and a Winchester carbine, if not they would surely be at the top of my list. But as it is now, a .22 L.R. or W.R.F., pre war Model 61 with octagon...

    Weld on CMP Ceremonial Garand

This is a picture of the weld on a ceremonial Garand that was received from CMP. This is not to say all have a weld such as this, but alot do. Others have much more extensive weld and may not be safe to fire. That is a decision to be made by you or your gunsmith. This is what the owner of...

M1 Garand Ceremonial offered by CMP

Hasn't gone up much, 100 rds @ $ 26.00 is .26 a round. Seems from what I have been reading on the Forum on the CMP site, it's the luck of the draw with these "ceremonial" Garands. If you are able to get to one of the "stores" ,and can pick one out, you can do OK. Some have just a small tack...
