This is a picture of the weld on a ceremonial Garand that was received from CMP. This is not to say all have a weld such as this, but alot do. Others have much more extensive weld and may not be safe to fire. That is a decision to be made by you or your gunsmith.

This is what the owner of the above rifle had to say:

I opened up the ceremonial rifle box. Suffice to say, I'm very pleased!
--3 million with what look like original finish
--A completely IHC trigger group! Sweet.
--52 barrel with as-new specs (0 muzzle wear and 2 on the throat)
--small tack weld. I am taking this to a gunsmith to have checked
out. If it passes I'll build this into a shooter.
--Other parts are in great shape. Came with the blank adaptor, too.

Here is another find and what that buyer had to say :

Found a great H&R, and figured I'd just glance at the ceremonial rack. Then I saw it, a low digit springfield, in great shape. Aargh, I bought it and gave the H&R to my buddy.

I knew I had the makings of something good. Didn't know how good until I cleaned everything up and made sure it could be fired. The rifle appeared to be unfired since overhaul, at Red River Army depot in 1966. They just tacked it and shipped it somewhere, and then it appears it was unused. All the parts were new, with a nice green gray park. The barrel was 8-65 dated, an H&R bolt, and a real mix of parts. It really makes me mad that this rifle was converted to a ceremonial, because it's so nice. I think the barrel has never had a round through it (except being proofed, and the rounds I fired for a functional check). The stock is typical, with handling marks and a lot of dirt I had to clean. Only mark is a small crossed cannon on the pistol grip. The mechanicals also had the original grease from RRAD. Just unbelievable. And with a reciever from August, 1939.

I couldn't pass it up. God forgive me for bringing another ceremonial back to life. It's a good one.

So is it worth a gamble of $ 250.00 ? To me it is.
