+1 on the Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail(CBOB). I thought I wanted an XD until I got to handle a CBOB. They list for a little more than $1100 out here, but I think it's worth saving for. They've done a lot of work making this a comfortable 1911 to carry.

Don't care much for subcompacts or glocks. I like the full size XD(4" barrel) and bobtail 1911, but if I had to go that small I'd get a J-frame revolver.:)

FWIW I trust my dogs more than any security system or floodlights, and I install burgular alarms.

If you can, take an anti to the range, show them the four rules, and let them shoot something easy like a .22. If there is any hope for them then nature will take it's course.:)
