Funny you should ask this - the last time I worked in MI I bought some wheelweights from a place called R&M recycling for 16 cents a pound. This was a little over a year ago and I was struggling to find wheelweights anywhere. At 16 cents, I loaded up as much as my little explorer would carry...
Congratulations!
I find cast bullet shooting to be very rewarding. I can spend a whole day shooting and working up new loads at very little cost.
I want to try cast bullets in my Eddystone, but I have to replace the barrel first. Right now I'm just shooting cast in my 1898 Krag and 1903s...
I have been using Rel-17 with 180 gr jacketed bullets. This has been my most accurate combination by far, it works well with either Sierra Pro-Hunters or Speer RN bullets. The RN bullets are typically better because of the mag length restriction and long throat of the Krag.
In my original...
I don't know about the Armalite AR10, but the DPMS LR308 uses a slightly different lower parts kit from an AR15. The takedown pins are longer on the 308. An AR15 trigger group will work in an LR308, but some manufacturers do offer a 308 specific trigger group, presumably with a heavier hammer...
For what it's worth, Kroger used to be a corporate sponsor of GeorgiaCarry.org. For some time I shopped at Kroger exclusively for this very reason. They gave up the sponsorship within the last year or two.
IMO, the best rail by far is the DD Lite: http://www.danieldefense.com/?page=shop/browse&category=railsystems_7.62{ar10}literails
The DD Lite is a narrow rail, and if you want you can put ladder type rail covers on the sides without adding any weight or bulk. They are as light as a free...
It installs like any other free-float rail, but it uses a different steel barrel nut. As other posters mentioned, DD sells the wrench for $10.
Some people use wrenches made for AR15 receiver extension castle nuts, but the DD wrench fits a whole lot better. The diameter of the castle nut...
Fulton Armory makes rifles based on the DPMS pattern, and they offer chrome lined Criterion barrels by Krieger.
I have a DPMS LR308 with a 24" fluted bull barrel and it is superbly accurate, although heavy. I'm happy enough with this platform that I am building a lightweight upper for it...
I wouldn't call it a common occurence, but it does happen sometimes. Sig has developed a bad reputation with some customers because their guns are fairly expensive and they don't always honor their own written warranty. I had a similar problem with an anodized aluminum frame on a new Sig and...
To clarify, Daniel Defense does make a DD lite rail specific for the LR308.
In case anyone else is interested, I called them and they said the ID of the 308 Lite rail is 1.42". The SASS barrel is about 1.125" OD, so that leaves ~0.147" clearance under the handguard. It should work okay.
Real Mags,
Can you please elaborate on this?
Even the SASS barrel OD is slightly smaller than a standard 308 barrel extension, so any correct barrel nut for a 308 upper should work. Otherwise the barrel would have to be threaded on after the handguard. :scrutiny:
What type of problem...
Has anyone here installed a Daniel Defense Lite rail on a DPMS SASS 7.62 barrel?
I'm asking because the SASS barrel is thicker than a standard bull (only between the barrel extension and gas block). They even make a special SASS gas block because with a standard 0.936" gas block the gas tube...
I got a couple of 1917s from the CMP a while back. One was a "Salvage" grade and the other was a painted rack grade. They both headspaced fine and after using a little paint stripper the rack grade looks very nice.
Mine don't especially like 150s, but they both shoot 2.5 MOA with 168 or 180...
You asked about external ballistics and accuracy -
I have worked up loads in a bunch of different rifles, I don't remember ever finding a combination with a Hornady bullet that was more accurate than the equivalent Sierra bullet. Sierra is usually significantly better, IMO. My advice would...
For those that have had success with the Wideners tracers - how far out from the muzzle do they light? I thought most tracers were designed to light at least 150 yds out so they don't pinpoint the shooter's position.
I wish I had bought more too. I remember that I almost passed on it last year because I read internet complaints about muzzle flash and other weird things. So far I have no problems with it in 223, 308 and 30-06.
Jeff,
From your post I can't be sure if you loaded 21.4, 22, and 22.5 gr sequentially into the same set of brass and then had split necks, or if you had split necks with 22.5 gr in once-fired brass.
You really shouldn't have problems when you are 5% below published max loads with an LMT...
Springfield Armory made some process changes in the forging shop around 1918; generally any receivers after 800,000 are considered "safe". That includes all of the Mark 1 rifles.
You might want to read Hatchers Notebook for the whole story. It is an interesting book with a lot of ballistic...
