Best intermediate range caliber for sniping?

I overheard someone say that some govt. agency was looking at .280 Remington for a sniper caliber. Doesn't seem like a bad choice. I've always been surprised it isn't more popular.

    Browning a bolt opinions

I have an A-bolt and love it. The only gun I have that out-shoots it is my Savage.

What calibers would you have Wincheste(FHN) chamber the Model 70's in

I'd love to see Winchester (or Remington, Browning, Tikka, Kimber, or Weatherby) make a left-handed .280 Rem. Just because sometimes lefties don't feel like using a 30/06 or 270.

    Scope for a varmit rifle......

I found a Zeiss Conquest 4.5 x 14 (44mm I think) on closeout at Sportsmans Warehouse a couple years ago. It still seemed pricey at the time, but I've never regretted it after using it. I put it on a stainless Savage 22-250. I think it's a great coyote rig.

    anyone using Benchmark in .22-250?

Start and Max loads for Benchmark with the bullets and cartridges I use are pretty tight (about a 6% difference). The more I look at Benchmark, the more I see why it's probably better for bench rest shooters than hunters. I weigh each charge when working up loads or loads for deer and elk...

    ball powders require mag primers?

For those that do use mag primers with ball powder, is there a charge weight or caliber at which you start using the mag primers? I'm thinking something like .22-250 is small enough to stick with standard primers but .30-06 is big enough to maybe use the mag primers?

    anyone using Benchmark in .22-250?

I don't think I've seen a .22-250 Benchmark loading anywhere except from Hodgdon. 33 gr. didn't fill the case very well either. I was using a Federal large rifle primer. Well, I knew it wasn't ideal for the bullet weights I like but I was still surprised.

    anyone using Benchmark in .22-250?

I bought a pound of Benchmark back when I couldn't find any Varget, RL 15 or IMR 4064. I don't have it with me right now, but I think Hodgdon's minimum charge for 55 gr. bullets in .22-250 is 31.6 and a maximum of 33.6 so starting 10% below max would be too light. I loaded some 55 gr. V-Max at...

    New .300WSM from the wife

I voted H414 because I've had good 180gr Interbond loads with W760 (supposed to be the same as H414) in my A-bolt. IMR 4350 worked just as good though. I didn't draw an elk tag last year or I would have been working on a RL 17 load.

    30-06 and Varget

I'm starting to be a little leary of Hodgdon's load data; it seems like their loads are pretty stout. I know every rifle is different, but my Savage .22-250 can't go near their max. loads while it can shoot max loads from other sources without an issue. As to the original question, I haven't...

    Any thoughts/opinions on AA 4064?

Slamfire, did that target say 420 yards? If so, that's nicer shooting than I do. Thanks for the response. The Accurate Arms load guide has load info for the 165 gr Barnes X bullet in .30/06 but I don't use Barnes bullets. I remember hearing somewhere that barnes bullets need to be treated...

    Any thoughts/opinions on AA 4064?

I like to use IMR 4064/Varget/Reloder 15 with 55 grain bullets in my .22-250 and will be working on .30/06 loads with various bullet weights with those powders. I found some AA 4064 in a local shop the other day and bought some. I have the Accurate Arms load guide, but none of my...

    Varget substitute?

I went to the Albuquerque shop noted in the post today, no Varget, but they did have Reloder 15 & IMR 4064, which pretty much do what Varget does in .22-250. Not sure about .223. They have the most powder I've seen in Albuquerque in a while. I picked up some AA 4064 just to try out.

    Reloader 17

I was under the impression that single based powders are more temperature sensitive. I don't use H380, but I remember a post warning about its temperature sensitivity. Reloder 15 & 17 both list nitroglycerine and nitrocellulose, so they're double based, not sure about the rest of the line.

Remington Primers vs Winchester vs CCI vs Federal

I started out planning to use Federal large rifle primers and Remington large magnum rifle primers so that it would be impossible to use the wrong primer, due to their different colors. Since it got so hard to find primers, I've also bought some cci large rifle and Winchester large magnum rifle...

    Reloader 17

I'm going to try it for 165 gr 30/06 mule deer loads and 180 gr 300 WSM elk loads. No results yet. I don't have a chrono so I'll be loading for accuracy and hope the speed is there. I'd been trying for a while to find it here in Albuquerque, NM. I went to Charlie's Sporting Goods to get...

    Varget substitute?

I know Reloder 15 is double base, but I think Varget is single based.

    wrong Sierra Gameking bullet?

mcgunner said: In theory, I like them better too. I have some but they didn't shoot as well as Hornady SST's out of my gun. I'll have to see how they do with Reloder 17. I guess thats the fun of any new powder, bullet, barell or gun- starting over. At which point, the wife asks "didn't...

    wrong Sierra Gameking bullet?

Thank you everyone for the great input. I must say I didn't expect this much solid insight on a relatively mundane topic- this is a great board! So just to be sure I'm hearing you guys right, this is what I've gathered; 1. If desired impact velocity is about 2700, I should probably not...

    wrong Sierra Gameking bullet?

I thought the same thing once I opened them up, but they're labeled "GameKing" and they are shown on the Sierra site http://www.sierrabullets.com/index.cfm?section=bullets&page=rifle&brandID=2&displayAll=1 I should probably call Sierra to be sure. Thanks, John
