Reloder 17 is a new powder similar to IMR 4350 in burn rate. Marketed at short magnums and .243 Win.
I use R10x, R15, R19, R22, and R25 and they all have been great except where they were mismatched due to user error. Then performance was so-so, like .640in 5shot group with R10x.
I'm going to try it for 165 gr 30/06 mule deer loads and 180 gr 300 WSM elk loads. No results yet. I don't have a chrono so I'll be loading for accuracy and hope the speed is there.
I'd been trying for a while to find it here in Albuquerque, NM. I went to Charlie's Sporting Goods to get some Reloder 15 and was surprised to find Reloder 17.
alliant powders are usually a double based powder and double bases do not burn as clean as the single base powders . However the doubles are more temperature tolerant powders . Are the reloader varieties single based ?
I was under the impression that single based powders are more temperature sensitive. I don't use H380, but I remember a post warning about its temperature sensitivity. Reloder 15 & 17 both list nitroglycerine and nitrocellulose, so they're double based, not sure about the rest of the line.
I tried it in the 7-08 with 140 gr bullets and was very happy with the velocities, but not impressed with the accuracy of the load. Sample of one though and your rifle may shoot it very well. I`d recommend trying it if you have a 708 and R17 on hand....
