Mike the wolf, the only way I know to indentify the kind and weight of the 54r ammo is by the head stamp. The site that NCsmitty posted has all that info. By the way I shot my romak last weekend and was able to hit a foot and a half metal gong at 850 meters. Took a few tries but hit it twice.
The Romak 3 7.62x54 was made to be used in the infantry as a battle rifle that extended the range out to about 800 meters to give the regular infantry a better chance in the field, and does a great job. I bought one about a month ago and really enjoy shooting it.
