I just picked up a Mosin Nagant M38 (Izhevsk 1943) with 220 rds of ammo... but I cant figure out what kind of ammo this is. I cant seem to find any specific iinfo on this particular headstamp-

Star
3 10
50

I think it might be hungarian but what i really want to know is the weight...

Anybody seen this before?

That sounds like Bulgarian. I've got a shell of it in front of me, and it's what you describe. I believe it's light ball.

most surplus x54r i've seen has a different color pain on the tip of the bullet, which denotes the bullet weight and type (silver tip -- polish light ball, yellow tip -- bulgarian heavy ball)

My understanding is they did this so they could tell on the battle field what they were shooting.... who knows if i'm right or not... Just basing this on my supply of x54r yrmv

not always so, my friend. mine has no colored tip whatsoever. maybe on newer production but mine is dated 1950

yeah i meant bulgarian not hungarian. the star and the 10 at 3'oclick are the bulgy code but i havent found the weights for the bulgy surplus

truth be told i just wanted to make sure it was light ball... feels like it but im no expert

OK, it is Bulgarian, made in 1950 (as you already know).

Rule is simple (for Bulgarian):
1.) Plain bullet is "Regular" ball, around 148 grains.
2.) Yellow tip is "Heavy" ball, around 182 grains.
3.) Green tip is tracer

Enjoy! :)

7.62x54r identification

Hogman Magnum you can find the different types of 54r ammo if you google "7.62x54r ammunition evaluation". This sight shows where each is made and wheather it is heavy or light ball as well as ballistics charts for each. I bought a Romanian AK 3 and I can only shoot light ball through it so I was glad to find that website.

7.62 x54 ammofor mosin nagant

:)i just picked up a metal case of 300 rounds for 90.00 $ of fmjs and opened it up and found varying colors, a box of greenies abox of yellows and a box of red tips...imagine my surprise ...the rest were fmj and the yellows are supposed to be armor piercing???:)

Mike the wolf, the only way I know to indentify the kind and weight of the 54r ammo is by the head stamp. The site that NCsmitty posted has all that info. By the way I shot my romak last weekend and was able to hit a foot and a half metal gong at 850 meters. Took a few tries but hit it twice.
