it seems to me that everyone thinks the rifle was 22lr. the article just says .22-caliber rifle. this could mean 223 remington or other 22 cal cartridge.... maybe i'm wrong though.

hornady manual for m1 garand 30-06 data says to use 45.5 grains of AA2495 for a 168gr bullet (that's max load), it also says it should be going 2600 fps. i would try reducing your load.

i was wondering what law they broke as well, that 45 they destroyed was not firing shotgun shells, it was still .45 ball ammo.
