Reading this makes me so happy that I'm fortunate enough to live somewhere that I can shoot without going to a range.
I never take just one gun shooting.
I got a little over 10% off on some reloading and cleaning stuff yesterday. One of the guys working there said it would only come to about 5% on most firearms and ammo.
Army 85-89. With the 82nd for 3 1/2 years. We only qualified once a year if I remember correctly. Zero the rifle, 20 rounds for practice, and 40 for qualifying. Never shot a military handgun while in the service. We did shoot a lot of blanks with the miles gear.
I shoot on average now...
Maybe you should tell that guy in NJ that just got seven years in prison to calm down. After all he was only doing what is totally legal in most other states.
If people calm down we'll just more rediculous laws like the one that he suffering under.
Even a 2 moa rifle will shoot to 10" at 500 yards, in theory.
Since you're handloading I'd pick a bullet with a higher BC as it will shoot flatter and be less affected by wind at the longer ranges. I think the corelocks have a relatively low bc. Something like a 165gr Ballistic tip would be...
Mossberg 464. Got it new for a very cheap price earlier this summer- $308. Shooting all over the place at 100 yards. Put a scope on it. 12"+ groups with 150gr. and 4-5" groups with 170gr. -- I"ve got 65 year old Mosin's that shoot better.
I've got two Savages. Model 10 in .308 and a 12 in .223. They both now have SSS triggers on them. Definate improvement over the accutrigger. Never had a problem with .308, but the .223 was very inconsistent. Locked up the trigger 1 out of 5 times, and it was adjusted to maximum pull...
I've read good things about the new Redfields. Made in the Leupold facility in Oregon I believe. Comes with a lifetime waranty. 2-7x-33 model for around $130.
Don't know if they come in silver though.
Mossberg 464. It's their version of the Winchester 1894. 30-30 of course. $308 brand new. For the price I just couldn't turn it down. The store couldn't sell it at $389. Sat on the shelf at least 6-7 months. Big 5 hasn't sold theirs either, it's priced at $489.
Still want a Marlin...
I'd get the 10x. I shot the side focus model before and it works fine out as far as you'll shoot a .308.
My target rifles have variable power scopes on them now. A Nikon with 5-20x and a Leupold with 8.5-25x. I typically shoot with them set at 12x, sometimes more sometimes less. I hardly...
Like others have said, anything by Matt Bracken or Stephen Hunter would probably interest you. If you do read Hunter's stuff, read them in order, most of the recent stuff builds on previous books.
If you plan on loading up a large amount.

.17 a bullet delivered and specifically for the M1.
Primers about .03 each. Buy them by the 1000 or 5000.
Powder..about .12-.13 a round...
Sounds like #1 is the better rifle. $600 doesn't sound like a bad price.
I presume you've heard of the offerings from the Civilian Marksmanship Program.
