Huckleberry, that is a nice old 700 made when Remington put more love and workmanship into the product. Go get it dirty and enjoy the small groups you will make.
I have 3 Marlin 1894's in 44 Mag and every one has a very smooth action. No feeding problems of any kind using round nose bullets. My first truck gun was my 1894 Marlin 44 with a 16 inch barrel. Very handy in a bench seat pickup. Very good defense gun.
Blue Wonder is an excellent bore cleaner for removing powder fouling, lead and copper. It contains surfactants that help loosen and dissolve the mess in about 10 minutes. Use enough clean patches to remove the residue and then coat the chambers and bore with gun oil.
A friend who lived in Montana used his 30/06 and managed to kill elk with one shot. One box of catridges lasted 20 years. As a past firearms instructor I always told folks if they are going to own one rifle it should be a 30/06. More bullet weights and styles are avaiable in factory ammo than...
Like esheato said..."You get what you pay for in optics." High purity glass and coatings cost more. Study the cost of camera lenses and you will see parallels to the cost of scopes. Professional grade Canon lenses like a 70-200mm f2.8 will cost $1200.00. About the same cost as a Leupold Mark IV.
For the under 50 caliber rifle type there is a valid reason the police and military sniper rifles are Remington 700's. It is called accuracy and dependability. All of my standard and heavy barrel 700's shoot under 1/2 MOA.
Mr. Walsh, Thank you for the excellent technical data. My 700P and Varmint Special has helped me create dime to nickle sized groups at 100 yds. I wonder if that could be improved by shortening the barrel as Mr. Lilja has proven? A friend who is a benchrest competitor told me a proper handload...
Go for the Remington 700. There is a reason the Army and Marine Corp use the 700 as their primary sniper rifle out to longer ranges than many of us will ever get to shoot. A friend of mine who is a benchrest champion told me all of the powder in a 308 is burned at about 20 inches of barrel...
There must be a reason the M24 and M40A1 military sniper rifles are built on the Remington 700 action. I doubt they would be if the military was concerned the push feed would not be reliable in battle.
One of the others is correct. I bought one 700 and put in my safe. Somehow I now have 8.
I have 5 heavy barrel 700's and all shoot sub MOA. Recently purchased a new 30-06 and this question makes me realize I need to shoot it and compare group size to what my 40+ year old 700 30-06 will do. If it is not as good it will be sold.
Help Grandpa
Take your grandfather to his local gunshop and have the most experienced salesperson work with your grandpa and help him so he can decide what he is most comfortable with. The local police can also help with information about being safe in the home in case of a potential or real...
700 sps
Congrats 45Badger. I found the Weaver Grand Slam 3X10X40 to be an excellent scope for the money. Check the internet sellers for competitive pricing and confer with the dealer you bought the rifle from. One internet dealer is riflescopes.com. They charge $319.95 plus shipping for the...
SPS 308 Varmit
Buy the rifle and put a Hogue overmolded stock with pillar bedding. Use 165 grain ammo for target or hunting and see sub MOA groups. The out of the box heavy barrel 700's are an excellent bargain.
Sendero
Senderos are excellent and very accurate as you can see from the previous postings. My 300 Win Mag shoots 1/2 MOA with 180 GR Nosler Ballistic Tips. Heavy. Yes. But if you want or need accuracy you will get used to the weight. Millions of GI's carried a Garand that weighs as much as a...
