SPS Varmint in .308 Win- worth $409?

Extremely clean (like unfired clean), at my local Gander Mountain. Figure i can upgrade the stock to something with aluminum pillars or block.

Anybody have one of these? Like hit? Hate it?

if you have full intent to scrap the stock at the first opportunity, then Yes.
Have been looking recently and have not been able to find a NIB or Like-NIB SPS Varmint or the similar Savage 12FV in .308 for less than $500.

I paid $550 for a new one. Shoots great, I got a 1-inch group at 100 yards the other day using cheap Core-Lockt hunting ammo. It looks to be a consistent 0.75-inch-group shooter using quality match-style ammo. As for the stock, it doesn't impress me too much and I'll eventually get a McMillan or HS to swap out. I've added a slip-on recoil pad because the stock didn't fit my shoulder well and caused pain after shooting on the bench. Everything else on the gun is nice.

I have the SPS Varmint in .223 and have been extremely pleased with the rifle. The accuracy is excellent. To find a used, like new, SPS Varmint in .308 for $409 sounds like a real deal to me.

A lot of mail order places sell just the action for that price and that does not include the trigger guard/magazine floorplate.

Exactly what I did. I had an extra HS stock laying around and the SPS never even saw use with the factory stock.

SPS 308 Varmit

Buy the rifle and put a Hogue overmolded stock with pillar bedding. Use 165 grain ammo for target or hunting and see sub MOA groups. The out of the box heavy barrel 700's are an excellent bargain.

Sounds great I have a howa 1500 .308 varm series 24'' barrel and it has the axiom v/s stock alumium forestock and allows the barrel to be free floating, the down side if weight is a problem she's heavy around 10 lbs. or so with the scope but no kick whatever you can shoot all day (no sore shoulder).IMHO the axiom stock can be found in the short action. great rifle, great price....mine will shoots sub inch groups (on the rare occasion that I shoot that well), but it has done so enough times to convince that I am the weak link in the 'system'.

Congrats! That is a good deal on that SPS! Both of the heavy barrel 700s I've owned in .308 have been shooters. That SPS should shoot very well for you!

Congrats 45Badger. I found the Weaver Grand Slam 3X10X40 to be an excellent scope for the money. Check the internet sellers for competitive pricing and confer with the dealer you bought the rifle from. One internet dealer is riflescopes.com. They charge $319.95 plus shipping for the 3X10X40 in blue matte. Your total investment would be under $800.

One good "bang for buck" scope is the SWFA Super Sniper. You can get it in 10x or 16x, front or side focus. It will obviously be ruled out if you're looking for a variable-power scope, but it's been almost universally recommended as an outstanding precision-shooting optic at a very reasonable price ($299-399 from SWFA's site). I'm torn between getting that one soon or saving up for a Leupold Mk.4.

Great find...especially considering Gander Mtn normally charges outragous prices on their used firearms.

You can also find coupons from Gander Mtn in some local coupon magazines.

Don't buy a hogue stock...save your money and get something good.

I am building something very similar to what you have. I started out with an sps varmint in 308 and had the barrel re-crowned and installed a rifle basix trigger (8oz-20oz adjustable pull) and placed it in a Bell & Carlson Medalist tactical stock. The stock has an aluminum bedding block system very similar to an HS Precision and alot of the new Remington VS stocks are infact B&c's not HS Precision stocks. These stocks run about $200 and fit the varmint contour barrel very well. I put on an EGW picatinny rail and a set of Burris Tactical Rings with a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18 side focus scope and it makes a great shooting rifle. The Nikon is a great piece of glass for the money and Midway has a version of this scope with the Mil Dot Reticle. If you watch, they regularly put it on sal for around $315.

I hope this give you some ideas of what you can do with an sps varmint for not too much money. I bought mine new and have about $1200 into everything, but it shoots great! It's an outstanding rifle and most people think it is a total custom rig based on the appearance and it's performance. I hope you have as much fun with yours as I have had with mine.

as a measure of how good a deal $409 was/is..

Today i put one on layaway that will set me back just over $600 after the taxes were added ($580-something before tax). and i considered THAT a decent price. that's an out-the-door, that's less than any of the before tax prices i was being quoted on the Savage 10FP i was actually looking for.

this will be only the third Remington i've ever owned, and both the first one i bought for myself, and the first NEW one (i don't count the 870 wingmaster that was my first remington as "new", b/c i have no idea if it was, dad bought it when i was 12).
